I discovered this forum this morning & had to join.  I’ve been using straight razors for several years now, much to the chagrin of my family & friends who believe I’m going to cut my throat somehow.  Little do they realize that there is nothing finer in my humble opinion than a shave using a straight razor.  Anyone can purchase a disposable razor and shave in less than 30 seconds.  I would rather take my time and spoil myself using a razor that I’ve stropped or honed myself.  There is no better feeling than one I get with using a sharp straight razor which is actually smooth and leaves my face with no irritation to the point that even  aftershave doesn’t sting.

I’m still a novice to using a straight razor & I hope to learn from others- especially in sharpening their razors.  There are dozens of ways, yet the finest shave I’ve enjoyed to date was using a pre-sharpened Mastro Livi straight razor.  He uses a simple technique.  I am also a fan of Charlie Lewis.  I note he uses a Japanese natural stone as his final honing stone.  I’m in search of a good one that won’t cost a small fortune. I have some Belgium coticules and synthetic Japanese water stones which will easily cut hanging hairs, but I am not doing something right in that my edge is no where near a Mastro Livi edge.

It’s a process.  The Mastro has been sharpening razors for as long as I’ve been alive- 60 years.   So I need to learn quickly as I don’t believe I’ll be around another 60 years.  In the mean time I will continue to practice and I’m open to any suggestions the other members have.  I’ve been fortunate in knowing another gentleman who has been shaving with a straight razor for 40 years.  His technique is simple- he uses a Swaty barber hone followed by a strop which has some chromium oxide on one side & plain on the other.    He is able to achieve an edge he enjoys.

I will thank anyone in advance for any suggestions in helping me improve my technique.  One common thing I’ve observed between the Mastro & my friend is simplicity.  Neither of them spend much time on their honing stones or strops.  This is contrary to people I see who use 30,000 grit Shapton glass stones or use 40, 70, or more swipes when they hone a finished edge.  I imagine the secret is whatever it takes.  Thanks.

Welcome fellow Garden State resident. People here are most knowledgable and -- more importantly -- helpful. I love to read the postings although, quite honestly, they provided great temptation to buy more than I need. That's what makes this hobby so exciting.
