What do we do when our tradition has been lost? We recreate it; and when methods of the past are forgotten? We innovate. When we don't have the luxury of learning our craft from previous generations we do what we must. We develop our own methods, we test them, and we perfect them. We can seek inspiration from the past, but we can't replicate it. We can pay homage to the classics but above all we must be original.

With this mentality I've focused my efforts for the past 18 months in making a shaving brush right here in America. It's been an exhilarating and challenging journey. When methods failed, I went back to the drawing board many times. Many successes were hard-fought. Some were sheer luck and happenstance. A bit of everything, just like any story worth telling.

I very humbly present to you a preview of the fruits of my labor.

The Varlet is a small batch operation, a completely vertically integrated one-man shop (as it now stands) focused on manufacturing shaving brushes that will compete with the best from the other side of the Atlantic. Made entirely by hand from raw materials, entirely in-house from tip to end including:

- Hand-tied and hand-set brush knots made from imported badger hair.

- Handles entirely hand-turned and polished from American-made resin cast in-house.

- Stringent quality controls including accurate loft measurements, knot shape and symmetry, and proprietary methods to avoid adhesive overflow while maintaining structural integrity to guard against shedding or disassembly.

- Several different models with original handle designs, with micro-calibrated knots so that each model provides a unique and distinct lathering experience.

I hope to give you guys more details and answer questions as the launch date nears. I plan on making available a small batch in about 2-3 weeks, and I hope you are all as excited as I am. I've been a part of the traditional shaving community for more than 5 years, and as it transitions from a niche group of passionate enthusiasts to a full-fledged industry once again I hope to offer products that are worthy of the mantra: Integrity, quality, and passion.

Cheers,
