I just noticed an update to the Floris line of shaving products, including new personal care items. The packaging design has changed, which has me wondering if they have made another change to their shaving soap formula. I am soon to finish a puck of 89, so I expect to try buy a newer refill puck. Does anyone have any experience with the shaving soap in the newer package? I would really like to see a photo of the ingredients on the new package.

Very interesting since they just put out new packaging a couple years ago (light blue). But I think they do change theirs frequently, compared to other brands, for some reason.
I'm wondering if they put the tallow back in. I had an email conversation with a director at Floris last year and he wasn't necessarily opposed to the idea, since, even he said, the use of palm is really having a bad impact on some areas/species of the world.

If they decided to get off the palm oil that would be quite welcome from me. Most of the stearic acid out there is still palm-sourced so there are probably many palm oil users still out there, but it's a step!

Orangutans, etc. Yes I dislike the use of palm oil because of concerns like these. I have some old tallow Floris (rose geranium) and it's a great soap. Why they ever changed that formula (and scent) is beyond me.

Guys, I emailed Floris a couple of hours ago and had a reply.
The new packaging is a result of re-branding. A new range called "The Gentleman Floris" has been launched, and includes the scents of both the No.89 and Elite. This is in the new darker blue packaging. The JF is not included and continues to be sold in the lighter blue/gold packaging.
There has been a re-formulation of the shaving soaps in the past year, apparently. As to whether it's a return to tallow, I can't say, but I would think that very unlikely.

Mark Herro received a sample of the new formulation for his Sharpologist website. He listed the ingredients as such:

"Sodium palmate, water, sodium palm kernelate, gylcerin, fragrance, citric acid, sodium chloride, sodium citrate, tetrasodium glutamate diacetate, shea butter, limonene, linalool, geraniol, citronellol, courmarin, oakmoss extract, benzyl benzoate, titanium dioxoide."

Teiste gives us a good run down on Floris 89 shaving soap and it's different formulations here:

http://shavenook.com/thread-floris-n89-shaving-soap

So the last formulation had the following ingredients:

Potassium palmate, Sodium palmate, Potassium Palm kernelate, Sodium Palm kernelate, Glycerin, Aqua, Parfum, Palm Kernel fatty acid, Sodium chloride, Pentasodium pentetate, Tetrasodium etidronate, Limonene, Linalool, Geraniol, Citronellol, Coumarin, Citral, Evernia Prunastri (Oakmoss) Extract, Benzyl Benzoate, CI 77891 (titanium dioxide).

So, the first ingredient has been changed from Potassium Palmate to Sodium Palmate. That has me worried, straightaway.

Thanks for those links, Andrew.
I have owned the last formula, and the one before that. Never any issues lathering either of them from the start. Personally, I think I'll be giving this a miss.

Not exactly a glowing review.

Too bad. The basenotes community has had similar "less than stellar" reviews of the reformulated fragrances.

The ingredients list isn't promising and neither is Mark's review even if he does put a friendly nod in there (perhaps a political move).  Disappearing lather isn't a desirable trait for my potential purchases, but I'm not a big fan of Floris scents anyways so its probably of no consequence.

Check out the results of his shave at about 1:10 in that video, pretty pathetic.

Pathetic, but I think it has more to do with this than the product:

Oh, no...
Looks like it won't provide stable lather.

I can't tell from a formula how the soap will lather. So I plan on purchasing a new puck and giving it a try.

I should also add that I can't tell how a soap will lather from someone else's review. Even Mantic59's.
