Today I found this at a flea market. Bought it for a song. It seems to be a GEM Micromatic Bullet-Tip, am I right?

I never used a Single-edge before. What should I expect? Is it mild, aggressive...?! What are your thoughts about it...?

Detail of the blade box: "Avoid the 5 O'Clock shadow"! Biggrin

With the blades inside the blade box, all very nice an tidy:

Wow. that looks great Emanuel. I believe the official name for this model is the Flying Wing micromatic, though it's commonly referred to as the Bullet Tip. It's the mildest of the micromatics, but it's still a SE so you may find it more aggressive than your DEs. It's in great condition & I must be honest that I'm more than a bit envious as the Flying Wing is the only micromatic I haven't found yet. I hope you try it & I look forward to hearing what you think.

Yes, it is a "bullet". You should get some new GEM or Treet blades at the drug store. The Micromatic bullet will deliver a nice, relatively mild, shave. Great buy!

I don't know if you're looking for the whole packaging of a *bullet-tip* , but if you are looking only for the razor, the BST here on TSN has one for sale... unless it has sold already!

Thanks for the heads-up James, I have seen it. I try to find all my razors in the wild first.

nice looking razor, Emanuel.

I'm a little upset with myself for having sold one of these razors (though it was silver, not gold) and another GEM before even trying them, a few months ago. Sad

It's a nice razor and a great shaver.

And yours is gorgeous! I'm envious!

Maybe this will help a little.

If you're curious about the blades you have, well, get some modern ones first to try the razor and see what it'll do. Then try the old blades if you must, but IMO don't. They're carbon steel and you have no idea how they were stored. They micro rust on the edge and you may never see it, but the shave will suffer.

The blades you want are found at a pharmacy in the shaving section. Don't use window scraper blades from the hardware store.

Here in Portugal, unfortunately, I have never seen those kind of blades before. I am considering placing an order on connaughtshaving for a pack of them or so.

As for the old blades, I have no intentions to use them. God only knows where they have been stored (after all, they came from a flea market!) Biggrin

That's a mighty nice razor you found. Gem SE's are some of the best shavers ever made.

To me, they are mild razors. Try a MicroMatic Open Comb if you want something more aggressive.

Here's a pic of the interior of the head. I found it very nice - this is all new for me, as it is my first Single Edge razor, and I am thrilled by this razor, and by the details such as these:

When I started cleaning this razor, a little problem came up: the golden plating on this razor seemed to be coated by a small layer (of varnish, or lacquer, perhaps?), or some kind of similar material. That coating, wherever it was, was presenting signs of age, resulting in a irregular and not so-shiny surface. It is also possible that it was not varnish, maybe some other kind of material that deposited there along the years, perhaps?!? Or maybe something they coat on the new razors? I really don't know. Huh

Well, when I started cleaning the head with a tissue, that layer started to peel out easily. The solution was to polish all of the head with a very soft tissue. The result: the mirror-like golden plating finally showed up in all its glory. Cool

You can still see in the handle some colour variations - those are zones with and without that coating, or whatever it is. In that other photo, you can see that also on the side of the head:

And today, coincidently, the GEM blades sent by ShadowsDad arrived! Thank you very much, Brian!

And so, it is all set up for tomorrow's shave! I'm looking forward to it!

That coating is a lacquer finish that is applied to protect the gold plating of the razor. Now that you have removed it, the gold looks better but will be more prone to aging and/or damage.
