Gents,
I am considering getting a Shavemac Silvertip 2 band but I am not sure what a good loft would be for a bulb 28 mm knot.
I currently have a Thater 49125/3 28/50 bulb, I love the softness of the tips however I think the backbone is just a tad more for me.
I also have a custom brush with  28mm TGN premium silver tip fan set at 53mm loft, but this one is with very little backbone, if any, for my taste.
I am not familiar with knot size to loft ratios and how that affects the backbone of the brush, so any advise is appreciated.

Thank you.

General rule of thumb for two-band bulbs is 1:2, i.e. a 56mm loft for a 28mm knot.  I personally like the Shavemac Silvertip 2-band a bit higher (1:2.1 ratio), so would be tempted to push it up a bit to 58-59mm.  Even this high I think you will find this knot has more backbone than your Thater.

Higher lofts tend to give less backbone, but often better flow-thru.

I have a Shavemac silvertip two band. Its a 26, set at 51. I think it would be a better performer had I had it set at 54.

I have just taken delivery of a 2 band 24 mm set at 54. It is a great brush with plenty of backbone. I was torn between setting it at 52 or 54 and I am quite happy with the higher setting. It splays some but I like it that way.

Bulbs can definitely be set higher than fans but I probably wouldn't go over 55 mm myself.

What do you think the flow-through will be like? I find the Thater a bit under performing in this area. I have no experience with other high end brushes though.

I have a bulb with a 1:2 ratio of 25mm/50mm. It's soft and scrubby while still providing great flow through. Whipped this up effortlessly this morning.

The Thater's I've tried (and enjoyed as they are great brushes) have very good flow-thru.

However, I would rank the Shavemac Silvertip 2-band as a top-tier brush when it comes to flow-thru (at least at a 1:2.1 or higher ratio).  Mine is as good as any brushes I've tried, and as good or better than the Simpson Manchurian and M&F two-bands I've tried (my other two top tier two-banders).

Is there any difference in the setting ratio for bulb and fan shape?

Yes, fans usually should be set below a 1:2 ratio.

Well, I wouldn't go higher than 54-55mm.  I have one with a Fan 28 x 52mm and it is just fine; almost perfect, really.
