La Savonnière du Moulin 'ass milk' shaving soap : preliminary thoughts here ..

This is a superb product.

It is a hard soap puck in terms of appearance and consistency.
Scent is a pleasant 'sweet earthy floral' to my nose.
It loads easily, and lather produced is rich, creamy, and protective.
This soap is slick too in terms of performance.
Post-shave the skin feeling is supple and moisturized.

Balsa wrap container is flimsy; I will be transferring the puck to a dedicated bowl soon.

Hi, Ravi, my feelings exactly. Can you get a copy of Savonnerie du bon Berger and do a side-by-side review?

I will see what I can do, Robin.

Incidentally, my personal thought is that this SdM is far better than the overrated MdC and its clones .. no comparison, really.

Stick of mint is simply awesome and very hard,  looks triple milled.

I think you are spot on. MdC has exactly one remarkable feature, and that is its price. Savonnière du Moulin and Savonnerie du bon Berger have a significantly better price/performance ratio. And by significantly, I mean significantly. The donkey's milk is a nice touch - and 100g MdC are ~20€, whereas La Savonnerie du bon Berger is €10, and La savonnière du moulin is €15. There are quite a few French soaps still to be discovered, trust me Smile

Can you give the dimensions of the puck please? I'm wondering about whether I have a suitable container for it.

I have the SdM and SdB and I can tell you that their performance is very very close in all aspects.

The size doesn't matter. They are, well, not soft but malleable. And they will fit into an IKEA Grundtal container. These things are very nice in any respect, because they are cheap, reasonably air tight, and have magnet on the back if you wish to store them on a wall. Here is one in action, containing either of the French soaps in question.

I've had my puck since around November. It's one of my absolute favorite soaps in all regards. I actually only just recently transfered / mashed it into my SV wooden bowl.

Although I was never a big fan of its scent (or lack thereof) in the past, I've grown to really love it.

+1. Just received it yesterday and compared to SdM. While it is indeed an exceptional soap, my vote goes to SdM.

They are both clean and simple and very good scents in their own right ... I would give the edge in scent to the menthe SdB and the edge in performance by a margin to SdM -- I could use either as a daily driver without issue -- SdM does give some SIMPLY OUTSTANDING glide with a straight razor I will note.

I also really like SdM. Great soap. Here are a few random comments:

1) The soaps are a bit lighter than the advertised weight. I think the "100 g" soaps are closer to 90 g and the 200 gram containers are closer to 170 or 180g.
2) The balsa wood containers are horrible. They are fragile and make loading awkward and wasteful. I took my puck and pressed it into a 4" plastic tub.
3) I think this soap is super absorbent. I would recommend leaving the lid off for a bit to let the soap puck dry. The soap can turn mushy if you leave it wet. Similar to MdC, I've heard that it is recommended to leave the lid off to keep the soap dry, but I haven't verified that this is the official instructions. However, this probably explains why the 100g puck sits on top of the loofah sponge.
4) Really fast lathering soaps! A little goes a long way.
5) I love the scent. Really versatile and pairs well with all sorts of preshaves and aftershaves.

Gordon the puck is an usual dimension.  I'm currently away from my office but it looks like a 2 1/2 in. diameter and about 3 in tall. I may be off but that's just by memory.
