Gentlemen,

A few weeks back I was working at a concert and opera production in Los Angeles. Naturally, at the first opportunity I made my way to Pasadena and The Old Town Shaving Company. The place had a big stock of Rooney brushes, among others. The Rooney on steroids pictured here was a massive brush, probably a 50mm knot, that dazzled me.

Gentlemen,

Yes, it was an incredible brush. I think it was the Rooney Emillion — it's the Emillion handle. A great shop, I might add.

Eric,
Yes, real badger, and dense as an Amazon jungle. I assume it has been used at one time because of the visible bloom.

Those big brushes, generally, are for display purposes only. They were a very common sight at brick-and-mortar shops some years ago.
Typically, brush manufacturers made some large brushes to display at brick-and-mortar shops in order to attract customer's attention.
Of course, that doesn't invalidate the fact that it is possible to really use those big brushes... Wink

I've seen several examples on different locations, and made by different manufacturers.

Here's an Omega, in a portuguese drugstore, downtown Lisbon, Portugal....

...another giant brush, unkown origin (maybe Vulfix?), at TOBS, Jermyn St., London...

...a trio of giants at the Museum room at Mühle's headquarters, Germany...

..and a Rooney at T&H, St. James St., London, UK... probably a re-branded sibling to the one featured in the OP...

Gentlemen,
Yes, Emanuel is correct. Such brushes, although real and usable, are usually made for display. Still, one cannot resist to imagine lathering with one of those monsters.
