Aldo of The Varlet approached us recently, asking if TSN would host an auction in honor of Independence Day as well as the launch of The Varlet.
We agreed to allow this auction as a special event for our members, and thank The Varlet for this opportunity.

To honor our Independence Day and to celebrate the launching of The Varlet, the first shaving brush entirely made in the U.S. in decades, a special rendition of one of The Varlet's upcoming models, The Ranger, is being offered for auction here at The Shave Nook. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this unique Ranger will be donated to a cause to help our returning veterans from overseas.

The Ranger was inspired by the men and women of our Armed Forces, but especially by our brave soldiers during WWII, who were asked to cover changing terrains, dynamic weather conditions, uncertain ration and supply sources, and ever-developing challenges of all sorts to help bring the Allies to victory.

Trying to embody heroism of this magnitude in a shaving brush might seem presumptuous and overreaching, but in a very humble manner The Varlet has tried to honor this achievement and in this spirit the Ranger was designed with adaptability and versatility in mind.

The knot for the Ranger is measured at 24mm set with a loft of 48. It is of medium-high density, but closer to mid-level. With the loft set at the "golden ratio" of 2:1, loft to knot measurement, the Ranger has a firm backbone but the reasonable density level grants it excellent lather release properties. It also is versatile in lathering both soaps and creams, and can be used to lather directly on the face, in a bowl or scuttle, or mug. It's dependable, calculable, and with just a little bit of grunt to make things interesting. It's a brush that you can use on a four-pass Sunday morning shave, but can be called upon when you need to run out the door in 20 minutes. The handle's ergonomics make it a joy to use in any way you choose.

One design cue that has been reserved for this special Ranger are the three thick bars that adorn the middle of the handle. Inspiration for these bars come from the service stripes that adorn our soldier's uniforms. No other Ranger ever made henceforth will bear this design element.

The auction so far has seen some incredible bids… I'm truly grateful to all the bidders and ecstatic to see so much support for this cause. Just a little less than an hour to go so I want to post some details about where the funds will go.

After some research I've come across a great charity in the Semper Fi Fund.

This charity allocates only 5% of donations to overhead, with the other 95% being used towards program expenses which is what actually helps those in need. Every bit of information I've come across has inspired confidence in me and so this is the charity I've chosen to forward the proceeds of this auction to.

I'll contact the winning bidder when the auction is over and provide more details. Thank you again everyone and hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend.

-Aldo

I've decided that rather than offer another bid, I'd prefer to match the highest bid...and send a check to Aldo.

Congrats to the high bidder and to Aldo and TSN for organizing this event.
