I've been thinking about getting a Simpson Chubby 3 Super Badger 3 band (silvertip).  I'm not concerned about the size of the knot.  More concerned that I see listings for them with a loft of 52mm all the way up to 56mm.  Before I spend that kind of money my question is, what is the normal loft for this brush?  I thought they were generally 52, but apparently that's not the case.  Thanks for all the help!!!

Check out thesuperiorshave. They show pictures of the actual brush you will receive with dimensions.

I have no affiliation with them other than really enjoying seeing what I get before buying

+1  Since these brushes are hand-made, there is bound to be some level of variance between individual brushes.

Not to detour you away from getting your exact measurement preference but I have had one with a very tall loft and the bloom was incredible. I enjoyed that brush a great deal. I also had one with a very short loft and that brush had great backbone , I also enjoyed that brush a great deal. I don't own calipers so I have never worried much about measurements, I tend to let the brush I receive speak for itself. I do appreciate the gents that know what they want in a brush though just offering my experiences with the brush mentioned.

I have a CH2 in Best which I like, however the bloom is absolutely huge.  My fear is if I go with the something around 52 it may be too scrubby, or if I go with something closer to 56/57 I'll end up with a brush similar to my CH2.

You could just order a stand-alone knot from Shavemac. Their D-01 3-Band hair is identical to Simpsons, if not better or even Shavemac's Silvertip hair is quite nice, but not as dense as the D-01 3-Band. Then, you can set the loft into a custom handle to your liking.

Celestino, IMHO D01 3-Band is more rough in feel compared to Simpsons 3-band Super hair.
Shavemac 3-Band Silvertip is softer in feel, but in a dense knot probably would be the closest you can get to the feel of a Simpson Chubby 3 Super 3-band knot.

I do have both of the Shavemacs, d01 2band and d01 3band and like them a lot.  I was looking to add one more brush to my collection of Simpsons as I have the following: 46, TSN LE, Duke 3 Manchurian, CH1 2-band, CH2 synthetic and CH2 Best.  I thought I might add the goliath of all brushes, the CH3 in super.  I just measured my CH2 Best and it's right at a 52mm loft.  Are the Super's more densely packed?

Thanks for your input Claus. I kind of found both hair types to be similar. However, it could have been that the D-01 3-Band that I had tried a few years ago was well used.  Biggrin

Understood and I guess the Chubby 3 Super would be the largest brush you would have.  Yes, the Simpsons Supers are denser than their Bests, from the brushes I have experienced. Therefore, if you find your Chubby 2 Best too dense, then you might want to reconsider the Chubby 3 Super as it would probably be twice if not more the knot than your current Chubby 2.

For any Simpson model, there is a wide variation in the dimensions and appearance of the knots.  The Superior Shave is the only vendor which measures and photographs each individual brush in stock.  This allows you to pick the exact brush you like

My CH2 Super is also a 52mm loft and is very dense but I had a D01 2-band that was more dense. Also, I used to own a CH2 Manchurian from 2012 era that was also more dense than this Super. But I never owned a CH2 in best for the comparison you are looking for. I'll say that I love this CH2 and it is a definite keeper. Very soft with just a hint of scrub, no scritch, perfect for me.

Thanks Shevek!  Can I get a front view of your Super.  I think a front shot where I can see how much bloom there is will give me my answer as to which direction I take on my purchase.

+1 Celestino, did you put this knot in another handle? Can we see it?

Hi, Rob. There were actually two knots and it was never my intention to do so, but I just don't get on with the Chubby-style handles, unfortunately, and I really did/do enjoy these knots as they are exceptional examples of what a shaving brush knot should be like, in my opinion, even with the size and density as it just works very well for me.

Here are the two knots in their new handles which I am sure you have seen before:
