As a means to losing some weight and improving my overall health I returned to my local rec center for an hour of length swimming yesterday.  I brought my Omega Hi-Brush synthetic, a tube of Proraso green and a NEW LC.  I had forty-eight hours of growth.  That hour in the pool provided unbelievable beard hydration and whisker softening.  Far superior to the other methods I've tried which include showering before my shave, soaking in the bathtub, or applying a warm towel over a face full of lather.  I thought it would provide a good prep, but was unprepared for how much of a difference there was.  Simply outstanding!

+1 ?

My face gets very dry after swimming so I am not 100% sure my face would agree with a shave straight after. I can imagine that your whiskers are well hydrated.

If I didn't live in a barren wasteland desert, I'd consider finding a local watering hole and give this a shot. I could use to shed the pounds and the hair more efficiently. But I can't bring myself to swim in a pool other than one I would own personally, and haven't got around to purchasing that

I did this for two years a quick 20 minute pre shave in the steam room after about an hour of swimming and the whiskers were popping off. My only issue was my peripheral space, the bathrooms usually have people roaming around and its pretty indecent to slap someone else kid for running into you and slicing your face. Made shaving more interesting when you get looks and questions regarding the style of shaving even managed to convert a couple of guys.

I always have an amazing shave after a day in the ocean. On my day off I always go to the beach and swim. Before I shave. There is something special that sea water does for your face.

Never tried it after swimming but I do enjoy a straight shave after the sauna.

Yup. Hair follicles absorb moisture and expand in the pore. Once you shave and and apply the ASL, the follicles recede and you feel nothing but skin when you touch your face. The same premise of the hot towel, wash your face first, etc., etc. You are basically soaking your face for an hour before shave. Cant get much more hydrated than that.

I hear you i have onlookers when i shave at my country club.  then comes the questions..."is that a straight razor?
" I didnt think people used these anymore... etc etc

The long time soaking indeed does a lot. I was surprised how my bristles stand off after swimming. Time to integrate that in a shave ...Smile
