Up in Maine on vaca this week and ran across the Portland General Store in my travels. A great little throwback type shop focused on shaving, scents and a few other items. Greeted by a very nice & passionate man.

I don't see anything about this soap here on TSN but did read some on other forums. I figured I will throw out my review after one shave. I have read there was a reformulation at some point that was not as loved as the original. My ingredient list is almost dead on to what I read the original was and with that I got an explosion of slick and cushiony lather.

I loaded right in the tub and lathered on my face as always. No issues there, and I believe my water here in Maine is rather hard. The scent is manly but not over the top. I get some cedar in there with the whiskey and I do enjoy it! Like I said, very slick and an easy shave. Post shave feel is certainly above average for me too.

At $18 for 240ml of hard soap in a nice plastic tub, I'll take it! If I ever were to use it all up I'd certainly replace.

I have seen their soaps before but was hesitant to try them out of fear of not liking it. Thank you for the review, I may finally have to give them a try.

I hear you. It looked like a melt and pour so I was hesitant but figured for $18 on an in person transaction, I'd give it a shot. I do not think it is a melt and pour anymore.

I've tried their soap and the whiskey one is totally non latherable.
It's about an year ago, don't know if they changed the bad regimen.

Rob, I am curious why you don't believe it is melt-and-pour soap. It does resemble those types of soap.  Good luck with it.

I believe the real issue is so many men in Maine still use crosscut saws or felling axes to shave with.

They make good body soap, but i dont know about their shave soaps. When i went up there i bought some AS/body soap/prorasso green and stayed away from the shave soap. looks too transparent for me to be sold on buying it

Read that on B&B too but certainly not the case with the tub of whiskey I have.  No olive oil in this one, do you have it in yours?

I could certainly be wrong, but if it's melt and pour it's extra suped up.  I had only a few melt and pour but they were never this thick or as easy to lather.

Strange, nothing outside of their own brand at the shop I went too.  I was hoping they would have many brands to choose from, but that's not what it was.  Did you go to the shop on York St.?

Post the ingredients and that will answer the formulation question. I have been enticed by their scents, but I too assumed it was melt and pour which kept me away.

Ugh, wish I knew there was another one with multiple brands!

It's hard to photograph the ingredients on my tub, but their website list matches what my tub says. Apparently there is a different formulation for the stand alone puck vs. the soap in a tub. That could be the reason for the mixed results.

Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Safflower Oil, Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Purified Water, Goats Milk, Cocoa Butter, Raw Beeswax, Bentonite Clay, Essential Oils, Sodium Hydroxide, Sorbitan Oleate, Soy Bean Protein, Hydrolized Wheat Protein.
