I was doing some pondering about my shaving routine, and inspired by Johnny's signature, I decided to do less with my routine.  Instead of the three passes that I normally do, I have decided to do two passes, with the grain and against the grain.

I started this evening and I have to say that I achieved the same type of shave I was achieving before.  My face feels better and I think in the long run, it will do my face a lot of good.

So, have you gents have tried to achieve more with less?  Have you try to achieve that excellent shave with less passes?

I have to say that I'm going to stick with this routine.  It is a new thing, but it feels great!

Yep, the less time that blade is on my face the better. I used to do 3 passes and my face would be dry and peeling and just sore especially if I skip a day. I cut out the ATG pass all together and just go cross grain. I also stretch the skin for both passes. If I do my part then 3 passes is just overkill. I'm going to haft to shave everyday regardless, and being a white guy with dark hair(not too white but you know) I always have a shadow or as my kids say my Fred flinstone going no matter what.

No, I don't get as close a shave as I like  with anything less than three passes and it's not an issue with my skin anyway. My skin, like the rest of me, is very insensitive.

"......and being a white guy with dark hair(not too white but you know) I always have a shadow or as my kids say my Fred flinstone going no matter what. " I solved that issue by going white with my beard as well.

I've always only done two passes. When I have a good sharp edge on my straight, I could probably almost get away with one pass. I don't do an ATG pass, and my face is very appreciative.

Unfortunately, with my very coarse and dark beard, 3 passes + touch-ups is the only way I can get a good and presentable shave.  Shy

2 passes. People seem to do 3 passes just because that is the default it is taught go WTG then XTG then ATG but that is not necessary. I go WTG and WTG. Sometimes WTG and ATG. I have much less irritation.

If I'm in a hurry & I shaved the day before, then I can even do a 1-pass ATG for a DFS+ result.

Yea, devolved too but not in the number of passes done. I do no prep, use cold water and face lather. No bowls or scuttles involved. I do 4 passes with a SR or DE and use ammonium alum post shave no problem with sensitivity here.  About as simple as I can get it.

When using my R41 I only do 2 passes, along and across. When using my DE89 I still do 3 passes, but eliminated the 4th touch up pass for the most part. I also stopped going against the grain, just along twice and across once.

I generally do 3 passes with a DE and only 2 with a Straight.

The results being a BBS with the DE's and a DFS with the Straight.

No touch-ups at all.

And I realize we all have different skin types and variety in beard coarseness.  Some of us need more or less to achieve the desired result.

No prep other than maybe wash face.
Face or hand lather, no brush soaking.
3 passes if I have the time, 2 if I don't.
There's quite a bit of beard reduction between 2 and 3, but not as much as between 1 and 2

Sometimes I ll skip going across the grain and just do two passes, WTG & ATG. Still achieve good results BBS with no irritation.
One thing I want to try is 2 passes WTG and one pass XTG and see if I get same results as the typical 3 pass WTG, XTG, and ATG that I normally do but with less irritation

Intersting take on the two WTG and one XTG.  Let me know how it works out for you my friend.

Will do! Will give it a try tomorrow and report results back here. Should be easier on the skin than the typical 3 pass since the ATG will be eliminated! Wonder if shave will be as close however!

My regular method, before this new one I'm trying, was WTG (1), XTG (1 each way, left to right, right to left), and AGT for touch ups.
