i'm thisclose to pulling the trigger on one. i've never used the knot before and have a couple questions before i actuate said trigger:

1. is the d01 2 band hair the same as the 2 band silvertip hair? if it's a matter of increased density, i'm happy!
2. what width:loft ratio do you guys have? i'm thinking of going 1:2 on a 28mm one.

thanks, everyone Biggrin

No, the D01 2-band is knot is stiffer and has more scritch, too much of each for my tastes. I think the 2-band Silvertip is one of the best knots available, with soft tips and enough backbone to face lather. I have it in a 28mm bulb with 52mm loft (on the right below), and have a 28mm fan at 52mm on order with them.

I agree with Richard.  I have the D01 and the 2 band Silvertip.  The Silvertip is definitely softer.  Having said that, I like scrubby brushes, so I don't mind my D01, which is also a bulb, ouch, lol....

These are my two Macs!

Silvertip Fan, sort of, on the left , D01 Bulb on the right.

The response is correct in my opinion as well. Silvertip 2 band has good backbone with soft tips. Good density and flow thru. D0-1 2 band is denser with a lot of backbone. Takes a long time to break in. If u like a scrubby knot the D01 will work for u. I sold mine off as they were too hard for me to get along with. The 2 band silvertip is a dream.

I agree, the 2 band DO1 is akin to lathering with a brick and the Silver tip more like a pillow...

I say go for it!  I know you've gone back and forth on it and I think you would like it after reading what you thought about the Silvertip 2-band.  The tips are NOT as scritchy as their reputation says they are but they're not going to be as soft as the Silvertip 2-band.  It'll have the backbone that you're looking for I think though.  Take some time deciding on the loft though.  They are a good bit denser than the Silvertip 2-band so if you go too low it will be a stick and will definitely feel scritchy cause the hair won't give much.  I'm no expert but I wouldn't go much lower than 2:1 on a fan and would go higher than 2:1 if you're going for bulb.  What size knot are you considering?

Id probably go 28 x 58 to be honest, slightly above 1:2 with a fan and I probably wouldn't try this hair in a bulb. I think the sweet spot would be around 26 x 54

Hey, I just shot you a message letting you know I could send you my Shavemac to see if you liked the D-01 hair prior to pulling the trigger on one. We just did that deal on the Wiborg. Let me know.

So you are the culprit!  Joking, congrats on the Wiborg, it was a beauty.  I have one in the works Thumbup

I have another Wiborg coming as well. I actually have a Shavemac D-01 2-band in a bulb. 26X52. It definitely has backbone. It is scrubby. But, it's really not scritchy. It's a great, very dense brush I'd compare it to my Chubby 2 Manchurian in feel.

My bulb is 24/46.  For me, 24mm is perfect, specially on a bulb.

Nice brush Number_one

The previous posts are all great advice, but to add my 2 cents... The DO1 knots are like lathering with a baseball, with scritch. I have never found one with soft tips and the density really affects the efficiency of the brush, making it much more of a lather hog. If you don't mind a scrubby and or scritchy brush with tremendous backbone, then the DO1 2 band could be for you. As stated already, the new 2 band silver tip is the bee's knees. Great backbone but with good splay, with soft tips and not even a hint of scritch, at least in my experience. It is the 'perfect' knot coming out of the Shavemac factory these days.

My thoughts regarding D01:
-definitely denser, and stiffer (than the regular 2-band)
-for a LONG time (months) it will be a bit scritchy, then it will turn scrubby
-for a long time it won't be soft at all, then you might imagine a touch Wink ...don't expect softness as a feature
-for a long time, it will be a lather hog, then will be a bit less
Long story short, it takes a long time to break in, so if you aren't a very patient person, seriously I wouldn't bother buying one. I gave it a year and I still sold it dissatisfied and of course at a heavy loss.
My advice is fan only, and get the highest loft available at the chosen width....if you get one.
I had a 23x46 fan and even after a year it still was too much for my skin. And to be honest, I ordered it at 22x48, so understand you might not get the exact size you order. Not sure if that's common.

I love my DO1. It's smaller: a 22X48 fan. The tips on mine are very soft and with the high backbone it provides a really unique lathering sensation. It's almost like a fuzzy suction cup swooshing around my face.

Eric, I've just sold my 2-Band Silvertip and ordered a D01 2-Band to replace it. Should be with me this week. I like a bit of feel when lathering and love the Simpson Manchurian, but the 2-Band Silvertip is just that too soft for my liking.
I pondered between a 26 and a 28mm Fan knot. I've had both before, both set at 50mm. That was way too low for the 28mm and almost perfect for the 26mm. I've gone for a 26x52 this time, which if the last brush is anything to go by, should be be ideal. If you are going for a 28mm Fan, I definitely advise going for at least a 54mm loft. Anything over that and you're looking at some large face coverage.

Eric, I have owned 4 D01 2-bands and 4 D01 3-bands.

I sold 3 of my D01 2-bands, because they were bulb shaped and even though I enjoy backbone in my badgers and love Manchurians, I simply felt the 2012/2013 Shavemac D01 2-band batch were too much for my skin, so I sold them.

Still have 2 D01 3-band Silvertip left, they share some of the backbone, but are softer, yet far far far far away from being anything remotely to floppy.

I think more backbone fans should dive into what the Shavemac D01 3-band knot offers and provide.

I only kept one of my Shavemac D01 2-band's, a 26 mm fan shaped knot in 54 mm loft. Still the roughest brush in my collection, but a great backbone monster, and because of its fan shape, it embraces the face and don't feel pointy like a bulb shaped knot.

Maybe the newer batches of Shavemac D01 2-bands are a little bit softer in feel ?
