I know the Nook is not really a straight razor forum, but I thought those who might be interested in a razor by Nate Zowada (Nate's father is Tim Zowada) might enjoy this thread. Nate is an American artisan.

Recently, I received my Nate’s Straight custom. Presentation is excellent with the razor carefully wrapped in vellum paper and tied together (including the tool to tighten the pivot pin) with a nice length of jute. Nate did my requested theme of a shark bitten thumb notch with surfacing bubbles on the tang, blade (partially on both sides) and spine. Subtle in nature as to not overpower the beauty of the razor itself. Execution of the theme was solely by Nate without any interference or further correspondence by me after the initial request as I believe an accomplished artisan need not be bothered during the process.

This is the best shave ready blade I’ve witnessed to date and Nate requests that you first shave with it without stropping. The blade is along the lines of a Feather DE blade. I am one of those who wants a smoother blade so after the initial shave I stropped it on linen and horsehide to achieve a buttery smooth edge.

Craftsmanship on this razor is virtually machine-like perfection leaving me in awe of how well crafted this razor truly is to behold and use. As I move further into straight razor shaving and away from DE and SE (although I still use a SE for touchup when rushed) I am finding that I cannot resist purchasing more straights. My affinity for the custom straights is growing day-by-day...and I have yet to look back. Enjoy!

Basic specs: 11/16" quarter hollow • 01 high carbon tool steel • Rockwell 62 hardness • Snake wood scales

Beautiful razor! I also have a Tim Zowada razor (used it this morning, in fact) that I love, and have been tempted to order one of Nate's razors. Congratulations.

Looks very nice, I would still like a bit more detail such as what grind size metal and meterials were used in the making of the razor, I do like the look of his Fathers work I've always been tempted.

Thanks to all who replied. I appreciate it.

Jamie to answer your question: 11/16" quarter hollow • 01 high carbon tool steel • Rockwell 62 hardness • Snake wood scales

Regarding his father, he recently made this beauty that I tried to purchase, but it was a custom for another shaver.

This is Tim's description: This razor is the latest in my series of Timahagane/meteorite blades. The dark layers and cutting edge are "Timahagane" steel, smelted from Lake Superior beach sand. The back of the blade is a Damascus laminate of Timahagane and meteorite. The scales are horn.

Permission was sought and granted for the use of this photograph here, from Tim Zowada.

Love to have a custom straight razor, I'm slowly saving money for one also. As of now, all my stuff is inexpensive.  I only have 7 AF  1 silver tip 3band badger, 3 vintage straights, 1 rolls razor, 2 DE RAZORS (r41 and WSP EL GRANDE ) my stuff is cheap so I can drop +1k on my dream custom straight some day!!

You have a very nice shaver.

Thanks for the compliment! I like customs because they are personal. However, I would not consider your shaving goods cheap by any means. Some of the best things I've owned in life were/are not expensive at all. Good luck with your custom purchase. Nate's prices are very reasonable. As with all the razor artisans, they are very responsive when contacting them.
