Yesterday, I received my Shavemac Experts Select brush. The chosen specifications were a 167 handle in tortoise, and a 26x52 D01 2-Band knot in fan shape.

I've owned a couple of D01 2-Band brushes before, but found the hair too scritchy for my liking. The 26x50 wasn't that bad but my inexperience ordered a 28x50, also, and that was unbearable. I let both go.

I recently acquired the 2-Band Silvertip in a 28x50 fan knot. Totally scritch free out of the box, this hair could not have been more different, however, I like my knots to have good scrub, and it's for that reason I love the Simpson Manchurian hair. As good as the 2-Band Silvertip was, I let that go, too, and looked again towards ordering another D01 2 Band brush with a higher loft than before.
The brush arrived, yesterday and initial impressions were good. The hair, even in dry state is very soft, unlike 2-Band Silvertip that dries roughly. I did a palm lather and on the hand, at least, it still felt reasonably soft. This lathering did reveal that the knot is more hybrid than fan, but is of no concern, to me.

This morning was my first shave with the brush. I face lather, exclusively. Using Mystic Water Irish Traveller, the backbone of this brush had no difficulty picking up the soap from the tub. The brush was so easily loaded. Proceeding to face lather using circular motions, there was an immediate scritch felt. Nothing I would class as unacceptable and very similar to the Simpson Chubby 2 Manchurians I have, on first use. Backbone is stronger than said brushes but, again, in a good way. I like it. Using paint brush strokes, no scritch was felt, whatsoever. I am sure the slight scritch will reduce with more uses. If not, I would still class it as acceptable and far removed from the intensity of scritch I had with the two brushes of a couple of year ago.

Do I regret letting the 2-Band Silvertip go in favour of this D01 2-Band? The short answer is a no. As good as the Silvertip was, I would take this D01 brush, even with the scritch it has now, every time. I like backbone, I like face feel, and the Silvertip was below my preferences in each regard. Time will tell if the scritch reduces. I've been told it will after twenty or so uses. Let's see what happens, but I can't see this brush going anywhere. I believe my decision was a correct one.

Very interesting David. I didn't keep my two band silvertip as I wanted more scrub. I have been thinking of the DO1 but maybe in a fan. I had an early two band bulb in a 24x50 knot that was so firm I could have used it to clean our oven. That one I did not keep long. I'm leaning toward a 26x52 fan at the moment but am also considering a 28x54 fan.
So the next question is, would the three band D01 be softer than the two band.
I really like the handle you chose which will be my choice as well once I figure out which knot to order.

My intention is to use this brush every day for the coming week. I'll keep you posted as to progress with regards to the scritch. As I have said, already, the scritch is slight and nothing like the hair I had a couple of years back. Any improvement would be welcome, however, I'd have no issues continuing to use the brush as is.

@Al.....I was against going for a 54 loft as increased loft=increased face coverage. The knot is fairly tight, so even a larger diameter, higher loft is not going to be unreasonably large. I certainly wouldn't opt for that in the 2-Band Silvertip, however.

Great write up on your observations, I look forward in reading your continued observations and comparisons to Simpson Manchurian.

My own experience with D01 2 band wasn't initially favorable, I felt that the loft was too short which made the knot too stiff and the face feel because of that was too rough 28x51 in bulb. I think the D01 2 band is a good quality hair and may want to revisit it based on this thread.

Thank you, Fabian. A 51 loft with a 28mm diameter is low, even for a fan knot with this hair, let alone a bulb. I can imagine what that must have felt like.
I'll report the coming week's findings as they happen.

That particular brush was the 2014 LE from another forum which didn't offer any control of its dimensions, gorgeous brush, it was a good idea at the time till it exfoliated my face raw   Undecided

It was bought with a big interest in Shavemac but didn't know how stiff the knot or even the strength of the individual hairs were, reviews only give so much without first hand experience.

You'd think a LE brush arranged through a forum would have the ideal specs. I hope your face recovered quickly, Fabian.

Lovely brush David. I too like manchurian knots such as the TSN M6. I look forward to hearing more thoughts on your new brush.

i did! i've really fallen in love with the simpson manchurian knots of late and i hear this is quite similar - when not reading about how much people seem to hate the things. i ordered a 28x58 fan and i can't wait to set it in a handle Biggrin

Thank u for sharing with us David! I'm glad ur enjoying the knot. I had similar experiences as the others with the D01 2 band. It was too rough for me but the last I had was 26/50. Maybe I need to revisit the knot with a higher loft!

Thank you, Avnish. I wasn't expecting it based on previous experience, but there is remarkable similarity to Simpson's Manchurian in this knot.

An excellent choice, Eric and I stated previously, even at 58mm loft, I don't believe you'll be looking at a cumbersome size. In the 2-Band Silvertip, very probably a different story.
