I was recently engaged in a conversation with a respected member of the community about the Gillette hybrid tech head. He had wonderful things to say and I value his opinion. I have always gotten a great shave from a pre war and wondered how the shaves compare. I'd like to do some research before I try and track one down. I haven't seen any for sale that I recall. So anyone that has any experience please chime in!

Thanks for looking!

Lance

The English Hybrid Tech is as close to Nirvana, well Tech Nirvana as you can get.  I'm a huge fan of pre-war Techs... With that said, the English hybrid-- is a class apart from all other Techs.

Currently I only see one on "the bay"

The Hybrid Tech is a closed comb version of the Gillette Raised Flat Bottom open comb and shaves almost identically to it. Most everyone loves the RFB ergo.....The Tech is one of the best shaves imaginable that is very efficient but "Tech like". Can handle any blade you throw at it, the sharper the better. And they sometimes have the coolest fitted leather case. The razor is  rhodium plated and the patina the survivors have is wonderful. A glow that is deep, rich and elegant.

They are very difficult to find and expensive if advertised as a Hybrid Tech. Have traded  most of mine off at this point. The best way to find one is keep looking at Tech sales on the Bay and elsewhere and to find one that is not recognized by the seller as a Hybrid Tech. Attracts less interest and a reasonable price most of the time. Collected 5 that way.

Absent finding one, the next best Tech is the English flat bottom. A step up in performance from the American made Oval Window Tech and 1932 Canadian.

Good luck.

Big fan of Canadian Tech's triangular base 30's to pre 51 variety. Recently found a rare 4 piece to go with my many fat handle Tech's.

The Hybrid Tech is indeed everything stated here and is one of the razors that I am sure will make it out of the house in the event of a fire.

If Gillette had continued making this razor, they would have bought Procter and Gamble instead of being bought by them. Smile

I have a beautiful hybrid tech and I love it. in my experience, it shaves a lot like the feather as-d2, but with slightly more efficiency.  it's very precise.
my Canadian triangle slot tech actually seems more aggressive to me, but I don't enjoy using it nearly as much. maybe it's because the hybrid tech is three times better looking, if not more so.

It took me six years to track down the Schick injector I wanted, so trying to find a Hybrid Tech doesn't seem so daunting. At the moment.
I have a pre-War USA Fat Handle that works well in the meanwhile. I now have to familiarize myself with the HT so as to know what to look for.

Ron, if you know what an RFB NEW looks like, the bottom plate of the Hybrid Tech looks just like that except without the combs.

You could start by Google Image searching "British Raised Flat Bottom NEW" and look at the pics.  Then Google Image search "British Hybrid Tech" and be careful; a lot of what you'll find are not really Hybrid Techs; however, the ones with the same bottom plate as the RFB NEW are the real deal.

The Hybrid Tech is the one on the RIGHT side of the picture.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot, that's a great help. I also found what I think is the flip side of the bottom plate:

Does that look right? I'm ready, then. Much obliged.

I found such a nice set of this Hybrid. Mint and unused. Makes me reluctant to using it myself.

Any way you could post pictures?  Wow.  A mint and unused Hybrid Tech is really a rare find.  I, for one, would love to see it.
