Hello gents.
I am on the wait list for a Wolf Wisker brush and am thinking of getting a Shavemac knot for it.

I have a brush with Shavemac Silver tip two band bulb already and I like backbone and soft tips. In this regard can anyone advise how the D01 3 band compares to a Shavemac ST 2- band, Thater 4125 ST 2- band  and also to the 3- band Thater silvertip?

Thanks in advance.

The D01 3 Band is soft but has a scrubby feel due to the density. I think they are quite good. No direct experience with the other brushes you ask about, though the new Shavemac 2 band is on my list to try.

3 Band D01 is a nice brush, very dense, I'd recommend a FAN knot in this one as it can be scrubby but mine had zero scritch.

Shavemac 2 band Silvertip is softer, has better flow (releases lather better), not as dense and one of the best knots I have come across in recent years...at least for what I like in a brush.

Thater 3 band is ultra soft, perhaps the softest of the ones you listed and quite dense.  It's not scrubby at all.  The one I had was BULB and the shape I'd recommend for this knot characteristics.  I regret selling this one, the D01 3 band was nice but not worth the price upgrade from other knots.

Thater 2 band, haven't tried this one yet, not sure how much different it is from the Shavemac 2 band.  It was on my "must try" list, before I got the Shaveamc 2 band.

You probably can't go wrong with any of your knot choices, they are all great.  If you can spring for it or don't mind getting a used one, my choice would be Shavemac Silvertip 2 band

Bruce thanks for the insight. I have all of the mentioned knots except the D01 3 band.
My 2 band Thater (4125/4) is very dense with god backbone, I do not know how it compares to the same size Shavemac ST 2 band. My Shavemac ST two band is 26/55 so the two knots are not directly comparable. My current Shavemac is great, but I will be getting a 28mm set at 1:2 to get a bit more backbone, that one goes in one of the Wolf Wiskers brushes I'll be getting.
I wanted to put something else in the second brush, I am not aware of other companies that sell high end knots only.

I have seen at least one guy convincing Lee Sabini to sell a knot or at least they posted a pic of one (from what I remember). And doesn't VieLong supply knots to a few of the artisan brush makers, it may be worth asking?

D01 3-band is a softer version of D01 2-Band, but with many of the same features.
2-Band Silvertip is softer and more luxurious in feel, but D01 3-Band is a more expensive hair from Shavemac, because it is harder to source and it has arguably the most backbone of any 3-Band badger hair type, that I know of  while still having relatively soft tips.

D01 3-Band is sort of in between the D01 2-Band and 2-Band Silvertip hair in feel and price also.

Claus, thanks for the insight.
If I wanted to get a D01 3 band in bulb and set it at 1:2 ratio would that lead to too much scrub/scritch?

Stefan, I have a D01 3 band and the hairs are stiff and a little scratchy. I would highly recommend Shavemac's premium silver tip, it's soft and incredibly high quality.

Thanks for the insight. I have a Thater 3 band ST, and I find it lacking any backbone. The D01 3 band based on hair description, sounds like an option with more backbone.

I almost forgot that I once had a DO 1 three band. I don't believe it had any scritch but it was firm. It was quite a bit different than any three band I have ever owned. One annoying aspect was that the hairs clumped together kind of like a Thater I had. You would likely find the D01 to have a lot more backbone than the two band Silvertip and not as soft.

You will definitely find a lot more backbone with the D01 Three-band, but it is at the opposite end of the spectrum and could be over the top.  It has similar feel to a Chubby in Super Three-Band in my experience.  I do own a D01 Silvertip Three-band, it is a 23mm knot set at 48mm loft.  If I were to order again I might even go a bit higher on the loft because I am not a big fan of stiff uber-dense brushes in general.

I have never heard of Shavemac Premium Silvertip ?

They have regular Silvertip 3-band and D01 3-Band Silvertip, also called Silvertip Extra D01.

D01 3-Band Silvertip is 20-30% more expensive than the regular Silvertip hair, and does have more backbone and reminds me of a 2-Band type of hair. Good backbone and nice flow through.

Silvertip D01 3-Band is the second most expsinve hair type in front of regular 2-Band Silvertip, while D01 2-Band is the most expensive type of hair from Shavemac.

I have both of the D01 Shavemacs, both made up custom with rather large knots.   The 3-band is 26mm, the 2-band is 28mm.  Both have fairly high lofts, and I find both -- while having plenty of backbone -- to be quite soft on the face.  No scratch at all.   Mine are both about 2 years old;  did I just get a different lot?  Or perhaps the large knot softens up any harshness that the brush otherwise might have.   Superb brushes, both of them, but I prefer the 2-band.

My two band is the D01, which is the most expensive of Shavemac's knots, and also the one with greatest backbone.    If you wish, we can PM on the details.

And yes, this is the brush that is listed under the "powerful" heading in the Shavemac site.  Mine is a 28 mm (very big) brush with a fan shape.  I will break it out and try it again next week, and post the results.

Never heard of it.
Guess the creative department at Shavemac got carried away in their lust for fancy names for a badger brush hair type.

It's just a plain D01 2-band hair in that knot.
Perhaps they by 'Extra' mean the knot is extra stuffed and dense ?

I just got an email back from Bernd. I asked him if he can make a 2 band Silvertip with higher density, and his answer was that the knots are made to spec and can't be made denser than they already are.
I have seen some posts about Shavemac knots being made extra denser but based on the reply I got I do not know what that means.
