Japanese. That being said they are softer and clog faster. A 6k king will polish better than a 6k shapton because it doesn't cut as fast and clogs faster.

King and or Ice bear are the same stone FWIW

Thanks Otis. I figured that since they are made in Japan but who knows. I'm just trying to figure something out in my progression and am going to be receiving a king 1k as a gift. Which is great as I needed a new bevel setter.

Kings are good stones and probably one of the most popular in japan. Just keep it lapped often. They do dish faster than a harder stone. They need about a 25 minute soak before use.

My kings live in water. I just add a little bleach to keep the slime away and keep them in a tub under water.
