Had a shave from a barber today in Lat Krabang, Bangkok, not far from the airport. There was really no prep but I had washed my face at the hotel. I did ask to make sure that the blade was new, as he was using a shavette style razor. I didn't see which blades he was using.

For the lather he put what looked like some lotion in a very small bowl, which you can see on the counter, and mixed in some canned Gillette foam. He used a small brush to apply the lather.

This was the first time I've been shaved by a barber so didn't know what to expect. He worked slowly and methodically, going over some areas several times which I thought would lead to irritation, it didn't.

For the second pass he changed blades and used a packaged moist towel which he wiped on my face before each stroke. He then used a second moist towel for touch up and to clean any lather. He never used any water.

The result is excellent , with no irritation or redness. He also cleaned up my collar and some other assorted hairs. The whole shave took about 15 minutes and was less than $2.

Anyone else had an interesting shave away from home?

Sounds like an interesting experience. Sub $2 seems like a great value.

I've had a lot of barber shaves in my lifetime but never one like that.  When you get back home you should find a good barber that gives old fashioned shaves and compare the two.  Thanks for posting about your experience.

What a fun experience. I've had shaves all over the Orient in the late 60's and early 70's, and enjoyed most of them. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Did he burn your ear hairs off?

Glad to share....

Regarding burning the ear hairs....unfortunately he did not. I had that done a couple of time in Turkey and it was quite effective, though frightening the first time.
