got in a couple 30mm knots and a couple handles from wd and im wondering what is everyone's favorite loft for this size knot? the handles right now are the standard depth but i can easily enough bore that deeper with a dremel

The 30mm is 70mm in length according to Larry's listed specs, thus at the standard 10mm stock depth handles it will have a 60mm exposed loft height. I don't know what everyone else has done but I just ordered one this evening and told him to make mine standard. I like a 2:1 ratio minimum, especially for a larger knot and would actually prefer the WD to be a higher loft in the 30mm if I could.

I would also have preferred a bit higher loft, it's all personal of course but if you set it deeper then the standard it will have a whole lot of backbone.

I have come to like my synthetic knots set to a loft of 2X the knot diameter give or take a little. I face lather so that may have something to do with that preference.

I'm guessing 54mm loft would be good because you'll get the backbone but also avoid the springiness.

Hobbyist, have you spoken or emailed with Larry? Last I ordered, a few months ago, the indicated 30mm knot/loft was effective with standard 10mm set.

Meaning that at 10mm, the loft is 70mm and the nominal loft is 80mm [this directly from Larry].

I actually had my 30mm synth set 5mm deeper for 65mm effective loft based on his recommendation and it is perfect.

Much like others, I face lather 100% and also prefer a 2:1 ratio as a generalization.

Just fyi and maybe things have changed but worth checking directly with him if you have not.

Have you actually measured that?  I went with a 15mm drill on my 30mm and the actual measured loft is only around 57mm.  Larry said there could be some tolerances in both the knots and the drill depths, as well as the glue bump, that would account for that.  Personally, it's a little too stiff at that point for my taste.  I think I would have preferred the standard 10mm drill.  It's so dense that at the shorter loft it doesn't splay very easily.  While it builds lather very quickly and efficiently, it tends to just push the lather around my face rather than brushing it into my face the way my other synthetics do (I know that may not make a lot of sense, but I don't have a better way to describe it.

Hey Garrett, not with calipers but measured on receipt and it is close enough for govt. work.

My instance does splay easily, great face feel and all round one of my favorite synthetics.

You know already I am sure, but Larry is very customer centric and I would reach out to him. I am sure he will make it right if not to your expectation.

I would try 53-55 for that knot. Do a test with the knot set in with spacers and silicone in case you don't like the result.

Awesome.  I've already spoken with Larry and I have a credit available with him for when I decide what I'd like to try next.

I will ask him now. I am actually just getting ready to pay for my 30mm in black handle. He hit me up last night to confirm I still wanted one now that they are in stock so I just replied and said to make one but didn't ask specs. I will let you know what he says.

I am waiting on Larry's reply about the loft height. I checked his site again and the synthetic 30mm is advertised as 70mm loft, but the silvertip and high mountain badgers are 73 and 74mm respectively.

okay the 30mm mounted at the standard loft gives an effective loft of 60mm as per larry directly

It actually doesn't feel or look as big as you would think for a 30mm. I have a Stirling 26mm and it is much bigger handle, wider bulb at the top, and the loft is a couple mm taller. I really like the 30mm WD though, and I'm glad it is more compact feeling for its size.

I had Larry make mine at the standard depth for a 60mm loft and it is perfect. I just received it last week so I've only used it about 3 times so far but it feels just right. I do notice the glue bump is pretty high though, and another member on here had his drilled deeper to make the glue bump as low as possible. It doesn't bother me though, the brush still performs great and I don't notice the bump unless I squeeze the hair near the base to feel it. The 30mm has a lot of backbone even at 60mm so keep that in mind.

Great and thanks for the current update- appreciate it as I may very well order another brush from him as a gift!
