Hey Gents-

So I was just in Paris for a friends wedding and decided to pick up a jar of the fabled MDC soap. So far I can say the obvious: it lathers like a dream, smells great, may not be quite the slickest soap out there but makes a thick stable and protective lather that washes away easily and leaves the skin with a nice neutral feel.

A couple of questions on use/maintenance:

1 Should I keep the foam cover on the underside of the lid, or discard it?

2 People say it should be stored without the lid on, so the soap can dry out between uses.  Is this necessary and/or does it make a difference?

Thanks in advance to all you MDC experts!

Alex

I have both the original and fougere. The original I bought a year ago this month. I'll share my routine and I have had zero issues. After I load and set aside the jar sits while I shave. At the conclusion I rinse the lather off the top with cold water, do a two pass squeegee with my finger to rid the water put the lid on and that's that. I have removed the foam pad. All this being said it works for me and IMO being in Nevada where it's dry I feel I can get away with this routine. Perhaps a gent from the south or a humid area could chime in. The above works for me. Biggrin

I chucked the foam insert and leave mine uncovered while at work but close it when I get home. The stuff is amazing in how little is needed to make an awesome lather.

Many of the MdC owners I know adhere to the second part, about leaving the lid off. I assume it helps further dehydrate the soap, making it denser just like the curing MdC themselves do.

My routine:
Bloom whilst showering

Load heavily
Remove proto-lather with index finger and apply to face
Rinse puck off until clean
Turn jar upside down whilst shaving
Afterwards, I dry the jar off; place on my shave shelf with the top OFF, until the next morning, top back on.
Next shave... Smile

I kept the foam insert but I do that with most of my soaps when possible.

I definitely let it dry off, but I also do that with most hard soaps too. =p

Lid on if you want to preserve scent...lid off to air it out. Foam thingy won't matter either way .

No need to over think it, it's just soap.

All evidence has been buried. All tapes have been erased.

Mine gets used only once a month or so (too many soaps in house).  I do the same as all the other hard soaps in the rotation, pour out the soaking water, then leave uncovered until the next shave.  Seems to be working out.

I actually live in the humid south. Post lather, I rinse off the excess soap. I then turn the soap upside down while I shave. After I'm finished, I dry the jar off with my shaving towel. I then simply replace the lid and store without the foam insert. Since I have a decent sized rotation, I never have a problem with moisture. I have even used it back to back in consecutive days and haven't had much if any moisture remaining from the previous shave.

I have the brain bowl and the jars.  No question, the brain bowl, uncovered as it is, slowly hardens.  That said, I cover my jars as soon as I finish shaving and have observed no ill effects as a consequence.  I, too, chucked the foam insert.

Thanks for the tips!  I like the scent so looks like I'll keep the lid on after letting it dry out for a bit.

Has anyone noticed that the fougere will lose its scent if you leave it uncovered?

I had the regular jar in the past and noe have the brain bowl, I leave both open at all times. Yes the scent will get weaker by once you agitate the soap with the brush it comes back fully... Only thing is the scent doesn't fill the bathroom anymore But you will certainly smell it clearly when you shave! Performance wise, it's supposed to cure the soap better, at least that's what MDC recommends. Fantastic soap regardless

Great points both... I also don't overthink gear. People particularly often treat brushes as delicate flowers. Although I do exercise a certain amount of care, they aren't made of porcelain! Smile

MDC, I use it. It sits out typically lid off while I finish getting ready. I put the lid on and store it until next use which could be days or perhaps weeks. Still going strong.

Don't be afraid, it's only a soap (this coming from a guy with OCD)

Whether you leave the lid on or off doesn't matter that much.

Perhaps if you shave with it daily, best to leave the lid off.

I removed the foam cover.

Have owned 5 MDC, yet to come close to finish one.

Now own 2, Original and Fougere.

No need to wash or dry off after shaving: just leave the lid off, and it will dry by itself.   It's quite dense: the fragrance does not disappear.

It's the best soap I have ever used, and it rotates here with Tabula Rasa cream.

It did, for me.

I had a 10g sample that basically lost all scent within a week, after sitting out in the open.
