I have noticed that a lot of wet shavers do 3 pass shaves.  Why is that?  I have a very coarse white beard, and all I seem to need for a very clean shave is 1 pass WTG, from my 2011 Muhle R41.  What's more if I shave ATG I get ingrown hairs on my neck, so I just don't do it.  If I use a milder razor, then I have to do more passes, but I don't get a cleaner shave from the extra passes than I get from my R41, just more skin irritation.  Anyway that's my opinion.  Toodles.

I have a beard thicker than Jello pudding. Rotated my R41 using Feather SS last week and if I did a one pass, WTG, I would have crazy 5 [noon] o'clock shadow.

Two pass I can last the day. Three pass, even with aggressive razors like the R41, keeps me high and tight.

Weekends I stretch my shave time and actually do a 4 pass shave for the smoothest of the week. I need the beard reduction of several passes to get where I want to be.

YMMV and all...

It originally came from the Yahoo Groups and was popularized by Charles Roberts ( i.e. 3 forms) and Mantic on his videos. Is there any sense to it and is it standard...no. As in all things shaving YMMV.

I actually do more than 3 passes with all of the touch-ups and blade-buffing I do because of my wiry, dark and coarse beard. I would have a 2 o'clock shadow if I only did 1-2 passes. Shy

I don't have a heavy beard, and only do two passes with touch ups.

I think I would look presentable with two passes, except for on my neck. It seems like I have to hit it from a few different angles to get everything looking right.

Two passes, WTG and ATG, with a few touch ups are probably all I really need, but I like to do an XTG in the middle for a total of 3 passes because I enjoy the act of shaving.  I do have to be more careful when I do an XTG, though, as that's when I get the vast majority of my nicks and weepers if I'm not careful.

Whenever I'm in a hurry, I just do two passes.  And if I'm in a big hurry, it's just the one pass ATG.

I guess it is whatever works for you. Me, I do 4 passes very shave no matter what type of razor I am using. I do that to get the longest lasting shave that I can get. One pass might be presentable but not for long. Irritation is usually a matter of bad angle and too much pressure though and or having very sensitive skin. We are all different.

Tradition! Also I have grown to like the results I achieve with the 3 pass method.

Mostly two passes, but it depends on the razor I am using.  But two is the standard for me.

95% of the time I only do 2 passes, with an occasional half-pass touch up (the neck). I try the 3 pass thing on weekends sometimes, just for fun, but I never find it worth it. I just end up getting a little irritated.

The short of it is: 1 pass with the grain and 1 against and I am good to go!

Blathers.  I guess I'm clearly in the minority here.  What's a duck to do?

I don't think it has nearly as much to do with how thick or heavy your beard is as how many directions it grows in.  My hair grows nine different ways from sideways.  I am a three to four pass shaver with any razor/blade combo if I want to do it right.
