Has anyone else noticed a steep decline in first class mail through the USPS? These past 2 months have been absolutely horrible for me with sending and receiving packages through first class mail. Some arrive week/weeks late and practically looking like some sort of wild beast of an animal got to my package before me. Priority mail has still been reliable for me. I doubt I'll be using first class any time in the foreseeable future.

I only use Priority Mail, so I haven't had any problems, but I am not surprised at all with your experience.

My experience is that you do Priority or you may expect to see it sometime in the next millennium.

Agreed. First class has been particularly bad since the 1st of the year. Apparently some sorting centers were closed and this has resulted in chaos.

I used to be the shipping and receiving manager at a small distribution center and we used UPS for all of our ground shipments and never had a problem. Out of 50+ shipments a day for a year we had only 1 missing package which isn't too bad. But the USPS first class seems to lose about 1 out of 10 shipments I get sent to me.

I have not had a problem except for international shipments.  The one package domestically that gave me pause was found after a day of looking in local post offices after being mis-sorted.

Internationally, I have had two go awry.  I shipped a package to Finland.  It went from my home to Chicago, then New York, then Australia, then Finland over about a month.  This does not seem like the obvious route to me.  The second was simply lost upon arrival in the UK.

Now international shipments are Priority only.  It's hideously expensive to Canada especially, but better than losing items.

Today I had a couple of orders to ship out and the lady behind the counter at the PO asked if I'd like First Class because it's cheaper. I told her no thank you, I really need priority on these as I've been having trouble with 1st class lately. She laughed and said "yeah we've been hearing a lot of that lately". So apparently we aren't the only one noticing the decline, and the workers know. Will the higher ups do anything?.... I wouldn't bet on it.
