When we think about good soaps with tallow,to our mind, usually come the D.R. Harris shaving soaps and the Art of Shaving soaps, but, which range is better, the Art of Shaving (made by Valobra) or the D.R. Harris (UK made)?

My vote is for D.R. Harris.Dont get me wrong, both ranges are good, but I prefer the Harris ones, for different reasons :

-Are cheaper than the AoS soaps

-You can choose between two different woods shaving bowls (Mahogany and Beech)

-Its hard to beat a scent like Arlington or even the Marlborough or Almond one.The AoS sandalwood and lavender smells good, but the unscented and lemon have a "clay" scent. If you dont like a heavy scented soap,Harris offers the Lavender, which has a mild, subtle, fresh lavender scent.

My vote goes for D.R. Harris, what about yours? (you can only choose one,and yes,why choosing one when you can get both?.But lets see which brand would be the winner).

I don't feel I can vote as I only have experience of DR Harris, but I LOVE DR Harris shave products.

D.R. Harris is one of my favorites. I wish I would have tried them sooner in my wet shaving adventures.

Harris' Almond isn't that sweet-cherry Marzipan Almond either. I can actually use and enjoy the Harris Almond.

EDIT: Sorry - daydreaming. I have used AoS Sandalwood and Unscented. I prefer any of the 4 DRH soaps (I have them all) to the AoS soaps.
AoS makes an excellent Sandalwood scent, but I really prefer Marlborough for something in that range.

This is a tricky one. I can't choose between the 2. Thankfully I don't have too!

For me it's AOS hands down. I think I need to revisit D.R. Harris to be fair. I've bought and sold Arlington and Marlbourgh, I just didn't find them to be in my top five shaving soaps.

It's pretty much a Ford-Chevrolet matter for me. They're both very good soaps.

I think scent choices could be as valid a selection criteria as any.

Hard question.

Lavander - AoS

All other scents - DR Harris

Negative to DR Harris is the potency of the scent is all over the map. I have had them come strong and some come basically unscented.

I actually like DR Harris, but my skin had some reaction and was starting to get acne. It was great when I was used it but had to sell if off unfortunately. Lather was very easy to produce! Art of shaving soap is bit overpriced, but still provides excellent shave for me without any problems. AOS SS don't have an intoxicating but a subdued scent but I think its b/c of the clay which is added! I would recommend both of them easily.

I forgot to mention that Harris lathers better than the AoS soaps,or at least, are easier for me.

Harris is a great soap unfortunately I'm not that wild about any of their scents. Still, it's my gold standard performance wise. I'm going with AOS Sandalwood, the performance is close and I prefer AOS Sandalwood scent. If scent was not a consideration, I'd go with Harris.

I think the AOS soaps are better performers. That being said, the presentation, particularly the bowls, of the DRH ones are not even in the same league. The DRH bowls are stunning compared to the AOS ones.

DRH is probably easier to lather. But once you figure out the AOS ones, they are pretty darn good

I voted for D R Harris. The Harris Almond soap is on my short list of soaps (M W F, Tabac & Harris Almond) I won't live without. Otherwise I would have voted for A O S.

I've only tried one AoS soap, the Sandalwood Essential Oil, which I used when I first got back into wet shaving. It didn't really impress me (although honestly I am not really partial to sandalwoods anyway, with the exception of vintage C&E Mysore), and I eventually passed it on to someone else. Since then I have used a few Harris soaps and have liked them quite a bit more. I'm not sure it was a fair comparison, but for me the Harris products have the edge.

AOS for me, its the only soap I'm hoarding.

Lemon is my favorite, followed by Lavender & Sandalwood.

AOS is more cushioning and has more moisturizing affect after the shave to me.

The gels and balms are 1st rate as well.

Most of the comments when it comes to AOS has to do with price, I've never paid full price as the AOS stores and online have 30% to 40% off sales a few times per year.

Harris wins for me.
AOS is good, but regardless of what the box says scent wise, all I can smell is a musty, dusty, earthy, clay scent.
