I have a jar of Fougere that I love, but was thinking of getting a brain bowl.  I've read that Original smells great and better than Fougere, to it smells medicinal, to they both smell pretty much the same.  I'd hate to drop a large dime on a bowl if it smells the same.  Thanks for the help guys!!

Not the same. But having said that, I have a jar or original that's quite a pungent mixture of lavender mint, and a brain bowl that's very laid back, with a king of "nutty" aroma to it, maybe because it's aired out a lot having no lid. I would not guess that these two were the same scent.

Be glad to send you samples, PM me.

Cheers, Steve

I have both and prefer the scent of the original. They do smell similar, I think.

I have both and do not feel they smell similar.  The brain bowl mellows after a bit as Steve mentioned, though to preserve scent, I turn my brain bowl upside down.

The original smells like lavender, no more no less to me, similar to my wife's high end spa products. I would assume Fougere would have a more barbershop, vetiver scent, though I'm guessing, and really holds no weight.

Who says that they smell similar, and why? This is like saying that red is similar to blue, or that a piano sounds like a drum. You would have to have a very very poor olfactory response to confuse the two.

Just reading reviews from b and b as well as here.  Just don't want to buy a repeat is all.

I completely agree. I don't know how anyone finds them similar. I have samples of both and the original is clearly lavender and the other is fougere (fern). The lavender is my favorite of the two and it is the nicest lavender I have smelled, although a tie with Castle Forbes lavender shaving cream which I feel is nearly identical.

They are very different. I much prefer the fougère, but I also like the lavender. The brain bowl is fun, although in reality you only get 230g of soap, vs. 200g in the jars, and for quite a bit more money.

I had both scents in the jars and I think they're both "dark" herbal scents and maybe that's why some noses say they're similar. I can see from both sides on this one. But they do have different notes, for sure.

imo they have the same type of medicinal type scent. (think a Noxzema type scent) but it ends there. one thing to note is the fougere is a stronger scent then the original. and i find both to be very very lightly scented. i do like them both i just wish they had much more of their scents.  if i had to pick only one it would be the fougere.

I have and use both.  I find the original to have very nice lavender scent.  I can see the description of medicinal.  The Fougere has a very nice fern/green scent.  I really like both scents but if I had to pick one it would be the Fougere.

I don't know how you find CF lavender and MdC original identical. I ordered CF because I thought it would smell like MdC and was quite disappointed. At least CF is a better performing product than MdC...

Is there batch variability? My experience has been exactly opposite. The lavender is quite strong and pungent, whereas the fougere is subtle. I left a sample of fougere out in the open, and it basically lost its scent within a week, so I keep the rest of what I have sealed up.

I just got some Castle Forbes lavender, and indeed, it is nothing like MdC. Castle Forbes' lavender has a distinctive floral note that MdC simply does not have. MdC is on the earthier side, for lavender scents. Personally, I find that quality to be more masculine in a men's fragrance, so my preference is the MdC.

I hope that I am not sounding condescending in this thread. Just pointing out my experiences.

I agree that they smell nothing alike. I have owned both in jar forms and they both had strong scents. Not the strongest, but far from being considered weak. I prefer Fougere but could easily use Original.

The scents are readily distinguishable.

Agree.
Some people consistently post shockingly off-the-mark comments and reviews.

I finished the CF so don't have it to compare but I thought it was the same. I will be buying it in a full size because I like it so much but MdC reminded me of it. Sorry if it didn't smell the same but that's how I remembered it.
