Simpson recently had ivory Duke 3 Manchurians available.  Ivory is my preferred handle color, so I decided to purchase one.  My prior Simpson Manchurian experience is with a Chubby 2 and M7.  I've never tried a Duke 3 in any Simpson hair grade, but I'm aware of how highly regarded this brush is, even in Best.

The first picture is the new brush out of the box, and the second one is the brush after 3 shaves on consecutive days.

My knot has a diameter of 24.50+mm, with a loft of 48mm.  This places it within the range of that 1:2 diameter:loft ratio preferred by many who like backbone.

A lot has been written about the Duke 3 and Simpson Manchurian, so I'll keep my comments brief.  The handle on this brush reflects the typical Simpson craftsmanship.  The fan knot is nicely and symmetrically shaped, without stray hairs.  The brush has not shed a single hair in its first 3 shaves, each of which was 3 passes.  The fan shape on this knot makes it feel larger than 24mm.  Most of my brushes are bulbs in 26-28mm, but this brush does not feel small on my face.  As one would expect on a Manchurian, the knot is soft, but not as soft as Simpson or Shavemac 2-band.  The knot has more backbone than I expected for a fan shape.  Finally, and perhaps most characteristic of Manchurian, the knot has a lot of scrub without any scritch whatsoever.  I like backbone and scrub, so this knot has characteristics which are optimal for me.

This is the smallest handle in my brush arsenal.  I have large hands and was concerned the handle may be too small for me.  However, those concerns proved unfounded, and the handle is quite comfortable in my hand.

I already know this brush will remain in my den permanently.

It looks like a beautiful brush. I also have very large hands, and have been trying a new CH2 Silvertip, but unfortunately am finding the brush and the knot to be too small. Perhaps I'm just used to large handles with 28mm Shavemac and Thäter knots, so I'll give it a few more tries. I just might try a Duke 3, since it's fitting comfortably in your hands.

I've got average size hands. The D3 feels just right to me. Mine's Best and is quite wonderful. Plus it's shed only 1 or 2 hairs total. Enjoy your new Duke!

Nice D3, how would you compare this knot to the M7? Seems like they have similar specs.

i don't think i've ever lost a hair in a manchurian brush. i'm of the belief that one of the things you get in a manchurian brush is a "better built" knot than the ones offered with their regular three band hair.

Very nice did you stipulate that knot specification including the fan shape? or was that the standard order with the Duke with the Manchurian knot.

This was the standard Simpson configuration for the Manchurian Duke 3.

The standard specifications for the M7 are a 22mm diameter with a 50mm loft.  Thus, compared to the D3, the M7 has a slightly smaller knot with a significantly higher loft.  As a result, I find that the D3 has more backbone and scrub than the M7.   They're both excellent brushes and the M7 handle is iconic, but I prefer the knot on the D3.

I agree.  The M7 feels like a bigger brush due to the taller loft.  It also releases lathers just ever so much better.

However, I find that the shorter loft of the Duke combined with the stiff Manchurian hair to be a 'better' combination and if I had to chose between the two, the Duke3 wins hands down.

If it wasn't for my SiLVERTiP Chubby 2, I would probably say the Duke 3 in Manchruan is my favorite Simpsons brush.

Richard, if that CH2 was too small a knot the Duke 3 will likely be no better for you. I say go for a 58 or even better, a 59!

A beautiful pair Jeff, particularly that 58 in traditional Simpson cream.  Both brushes say Best but have bulb 2-band knots.  How did that come about?

I do believe that the older 2-band knots didn't have a special name engraved in the handles and had used super or best handles from normal stock. Not sure when Simpsons started with the SiLVERTiP designation for 2-band hair knots
