So forgive me for knowing nothing of double edge. I've got a question about the ikon slant coated head. The head itself is pricy so i was wondering what handles would fit it or does it only take Ikon? Reason being I didn't want to spend $50 plus on only the handle. I haven't got that kind of money right now.

Thanks.

Scott

Any handle will fit the head, but you want to make sure that you have something that balances. The iKon Slant is one of the heaviest DE heads - if you screw a ball-end Gillette handle, it'll fit, but you'll have a pretty unbalanced razor that will feel unnatural to use.

Which handle do you have now that you're considering pairing?

You can get an iKon OSS handle on the iKon website for $20 - you won't find s better handle for cheaper, and it is a perfect fit for the slant head.

Ikon handle or Maggard handle is what I would do. Bullgoose Shaving has a 15% off deal store wide so might want to check there too.

The head plus the OSS handle together would be $106.25 on Bullgoose, but they're out of stock.

Still, $115 for both on iKon's site is a good price.

$115 USD = $160 CAD + shipping so I'm looking at around $200. Maybe I'll stick with my SS and straight razors.

Are you dead set on the coating? There is an iKon slant on the BST right now at an extremely reasonable price..

Unfortunately I enjoy the look of the black coating. Is the shave with a slant noticeably different then a regular de?

Yes it is quite different.. The shave between coated and uncoated, not so much. Keep in mind, coating chips and may develop imperfections over time (or in some cases - even when brand new).

Would I be better off getting a shave craft 101 and adding the slant head at a later date? Then I will already have the bulldog handle?

That may be my most feasible option.

I have the Ikon 101 and enjoy it very much but I do not like the open comb side. To me it is like scraping a rake across my face and it doesn't cut near as well as the closed bar side. YMMV as always but that's my experience with it.

I've used both the coated and uncoated. No appreciable difference, apart from the look. In fact, the uncoated will have no chance of flaking or chipping, not that I've had a problem with mine.

I have been using an iKon Slant DLC head with a Maggard MR5 handle for about a year now; the weight of the MR5 is excellent, balancing the head perfectly; the grip is unsurpassed; and the price ($19.00) is right.  Only caution:   have a Q-Tip of three ready to ream the filings out of the screw hole before the first time you screw the handle onto the head’s post:  a lot of debris was in my MR5 as delivered.

I have two Maggard handles that I use. I use the MR11 on my Ikon 101 and MR8 on my EJ. They are great handles and very good prices.

Maggard makes excellent value handles. If you're looking for one to pair with an iKon Slant, choose something solid, (not hollow) and at least 85mm long. Longer, in my opinion, would be even better. I think 95-100mm would be the sweet spot.

The MR-5 with its heavy bottom provides a great balance to the heavy stainless steel iKon Slant head.
