Just acquired a Black Super Speed Adjustable Long Handle 1972 S4, in an excellent condition. Well I couldn't wait to use it. Well I was defiantly not disappointed. Can now see why this razor is called The Black Beauty.

Three pass shave, WTG set at 7, XTG set at 9 and ATG set at 5. Think it's the closest shave I have achieved, even better than a Muhle R41. And it felt a hell of a lot comfortable than shaving with the Muhle R41.

If you can look past the plastic this is easily gillette best adjustable. Especially the long handled type.

If the handles are black enamel, does that mean there are metal underneath them?

I'm aware that the latter Super adjustable had a different baseplate.

That did not make them problem free though. The handle material is aluminum, and when left in contact with water long term, could corrode and make the twisting funtion of the TTO stick. A little hydrophobic oil with lubrication helps a lot.

From late 1977 on, they had a bakelite adjustment plate. It seemed to work as well as, or better than the metal version, with no deterioration. Perhaps not as pretty.

Great razors though, enjoy!

Sorry, the edit button did not seem to be working properly.  The handles are aluminum, with enamel.  I do suspect that there was some variability in the enamel, some early (1970-76) models were just basic enamel, while the later ones afterward seem to be more of a resin.  But I have no good evidence of this.
