......i've known a few Spartans...... good people......a proud people...........
...........but i believe that the Sparta trait of being economical with words still exists........
........the ones i've met were usually a bit quiet with lots of common sense, and always had very good short comments........... like their ancient ancestors...

..............my father was from Epirus..........

Those quotes are great.

There is a great book out there call Gates of Fire, the Battle of Thermopylae by Steven Pressfield.

Written from a helot's point of view after the battle it goes in to a lot of the Sparta culture and covers the Spartan's attempt to sneak in the Persian camp and try to kill Xerxes - not shown in the movie 300 but was shown in the movie "The 300 Spartans" made in 1962.

The Spartan quotes remind me of the response to a German request of the Americans to surrender in WWII because they were surrounded in the city of Bastogne and were starting to run low on supplies.

"December 22, 1944

To the German Commander,

N U T S !

The American Commander"

......i saw the 'The 300 Spartans' with my father when i was just a little boy in spain.......
......except in spain it was entitled 'El Leon de Sparta'...............

.......i visited the Thermopylae twice in august of 2000..........it was oppressively hot...... i can't imagine fighting clad in bronze, holding a heavy shield and lance while facing certain death in the face under a broiling sun.....
..............our ancestors were definitely made of sterner material..............

..........the battle site might be better now, but in 2000, it was in a sorry state.............. trash everywhere.......... sad.......

Very good, John!

The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC. Actually the runner delivered the news in Athens, which is in a distance of 43 kilometres approximately from Marathon. This battle is more famous nowadays as the inspiration for the marathon race.
