Hello Nookers!

My mother in law is buying me a custom Shavemac for my birthday and I wanted to poll the audience just to see what you folks would do, given the choice I have .

I have Shavemac brushes with every hair grade except Pure and D0-1 3 Band.  Of the Shavemac brushes I own, the 2 Band Silvertip is my favorite, with the Finest a close runner up.

As this brush will be a gift from one of the best people, if not the best person I have been blessed to have in my life, I will never part with it.

Knowing that, do I repeat with a 2 Band Silvertip or try a new knot I'm really curious about, the D0-1 3 Band?

I'm leaning towards the D0-1, but for fun, I thought I would draw from the collective wisdom here.

Thanks in advance for your reply!

Not having a Shavemac knot I cannot speak from experience but with the amount of praise the 2-band Silvertip gets I would probably go with another one of those. Maybe just get a different knot size or if you don't have both fan and bulb get the one you don't already have. My second choice would be the D0-1

I have Shavemac brushes in both silvertip 2 band and D01 2 band.  I've never tried a D01 3 band.  I would be inclined to go with one of the two hair grades I have already, but with a different handle and knot configuration.

If you love the 2 band get a 2 band that you know you will love and never part with.  If you are so inclined, throw your duplicate on the BST, it will sell fast and then you can make your own purchase to try a new one.  That way, if you don't like the new one, you can unload it on the BST without any sentimental feelings.

Try something new! I have at least one of each type of hair (3 band, two band, boar, synthetic) and I love it as it allows for variety in my shave.

I think if you like the regular Silvertip 2 band you may not like the D01 3 band. I also love the regular silvertip 2 band and purchased a 2 band D01 and the density is quite a difference.

Joe, if you love the Silvertip 2-Band brush you have, why not get the same hair type in a larger and different shaped knot, say a bulb if you have a fan, or a fan if you have a bulb?
The D-01 3-band will be very similar to Simpsons Super, in my opinion, and could also work well for you.
The D-01 2-Band will have extreme backbone and could be a bit scritchy/scratchy, depending.
Good luck.

Duplicate your favorite in another color handle.  Then, decide if you still want two.  Can sell the old one.

That's my thinking Joe.  A different handle, knot shape, knot diameter or loft.

However, if you will not be at peace with yourself unless you try the D01 3 band, go for it.  Always something to be said for new experiences.

I would try new. That way, if you don't like it, you know what you could go back to, and don't have to wonder about missing out.

Yes sir, indeed.  She also bought me my first Savile Row in 2014 as a Christmas present.  I'm blessed.

Indeed.  Some of us are fortunate to have a SWMBO who supports our hobby.  But a MIL - unheard of.

Over the years, my wife has grown numb to it.  Early on, I could get some Emmy award winning eye rolls.  Now, nothing.  Biggrin

I would go with the 2 band silvertip you know you will enjoy but maybe tweet the knot a bit, go bigger/smaller or higher/lower, or switch from fan/bulb to the other .. and as others pointed out you can sell your current one. Also you can change up hand design and color.

In fact, playing around with the knot shape, diameter and loft of the same hair type may be what it takes to find your ultimate brush.  It took me a while to find the perfect knot shape, diameter, and loft combination for the D01 2 band.
