My two favorite shave soaps are Barrister & Mann tallow-based and Strop Shoppe (like Baker Street with tallow).  I always liked the slickness, cushion, and ease of lathering both soaps.  I like the B&M soaps a little more than the Strop Shoppe tallow soaps but not by much.  What other tallow-based soaps are out there that are in the same league with B&M and Strop Shoppe?

My instant choices would be Cold River Soap Works and Mystic Waters. For me they provide the best shaves. There is many good soaps but these two along with B&M are my top tallow based soaps.

The only one I find which tops both Barrister & Mann and Strop Shoppe is Mike's Natural Shaving Soaps. Mike's Barbershop, Lime, and Hungarian Lavendar are superb.

I find B&M highly overrated. My suggestions are Mikes, Mystic Water and Cold River. Those three easily outperform B&M and Strop Shoppe!

I'll just repeating what others have said. Mike's, B&M, CRSW, Strop Shoppe, and Mystic Water are my favorite tallow based soaps.

I thought they only made veg soaps, and good ones at that. Had to check the website and I did not see a tallow.

To echo others, CRSW, MW, Mikes and I recently have tried the WSP Formula T which is very good.

Are we talking only artisan soaps?  If not, don't rule out MWF, Tabac, DR Harris, Valobra [the hard pucks] and Cella.

Among the artisans I would point you toward Mikes Naturals, Tiki Bar, Reef Point and Stirling.   I am not crazy about Cold River - for me it lacks the cushion of the others mentioned.

I'll echo what others have said here with some qualification.

If you like the feel of B&M, a lather with a lot of density and cushion, I'd say among the US artisans, Mike's is the closest.

Mystic Waters and CRSW are both very good as well but provide a different feel.  MW in particular is unique feeling among the tallow based soaps and one I'd try if youre looking for something different than B&M but still excellent.

Among the europeans, I'd say the closest to B&M would be Valobra hard soap, either in their own formulation or as Czech and Speake.

Of course this is just my humble opinion.  YMMV and good luck!

To the OP, you are going to get a lot of different answers and the best way is to try for yourself. I would think if you know about Strop Shoppe and B&M you are aware of all the other popular tallow based soaps, if not you've been given some good suggestions. You are not going to get a unanimous answer. I don't find B&M any better and in most cases worse than the other soaps as far as performance. I find them to be a bit chalky and lacking slickness. Strop Shoppe seemed overpriced for average performance. Get samples from the producers and find your own B&M beater, it's not hard to do.

Better than B&M and Strop Shoppe in performance, post shave and scents = CRSW

Equal to with no discernible difference except better scents = Mikes

A little more attention required to lather but with better scents and better post = Mystic Water

No one ever mentions it but,

Mickey Lee Soap works is great and their new formula is downright incredible. Réunion is all around one of the best soaps out there from scent to performance. Highly recommended

Brian, it is my pleasure as your wife makes some of the best soap I have tried. Its performance and lather is just wonderful. Shy
