I recently acquired a GEM Jr in like new condition and it came with 20 blades Techniq brand.  So when i went to use it I took out a blade out of the pack put it in lathered up with TOBS Sandalwood and went to shave, it felt like it was ripping my face apart now I had about 2 days growth the stubble a little hard but still it should feel like that right?  I took and put another blade in just to check and still it felt the same way.  So I have a few questions:

1) Could these blades just be crappy blades?
2) is this razor a fairly aggressive razor?

If it is just the blades I may buy some new ones to give it a shot but if it is just a really aggressive razor then I would never be able to use it and would have to see about making a trade for an Injector razor one that is very mild.  I know my L Type Injector I absolutely love.

You help and advice is much appreciated.

The angle of shaving is quite different on these SE razors...try holding the head almost flat against the face....as for the blades never heard of them...Use GEMS for shaving ..stainless and coated (PTFE).

When I first used a 1912, I used some blades I bought at a local grocery that said "for single edge safety razor use". I thought I was good to go. Struggled for two-three months trying to use that razor. Kept wondering why everyone sang it's praises. It felt like I was shaving with broken glass. I though it was my inexperience, poor angle/technique, etc.
Then I tried out some GEM blades I found at a local pharmacy. Smoooooth, fantastic shaves ever since.
I found out later the first blades I tried were Dorcos. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Then go buy some GEMs.
MHO.

Best blades are Gem ptfe or the Gem carbon blades. If you dont have around, you can order from tryablade web site

Carbon steel blades have a shelf life. Even if those blades were originally intended for shaving the edge has likely deteriorated over time. Get some modern Gem blades and you will find it to be a completely different experience.

I'm going to agree that those blades you have are "expired" I would absolutely try new blades.
For what it's worth I tried TOBS cream once and I felt like I'd be better off using corn starch and water Tongue
I'm confident your problem though is in the blade

I can thank my vintage SE enjoyment to Brian ( Kramperts Finest ) I now have a few including a Jr and they are all great shavers, I'd take him up on his offer or I can send you some blades.  I'm very confident with a good blade you'll enjoy the razor.  Some of my very best shaves have come from an old Shovelhead and MMOC

Are you sure the blade stops are intact and functioning properly?

I collected 6 ER/GEMs. The Only one I couldn't get on with was a GEM 1912 Junior. It was gold with a black plastic handle, in near mint shape. I don't know why, but it was way too aggressive for my face, even though it seemed to have the same head design as the ER 1912 which shaves me smooth and comfortably. I've since PIFfed the Jr. to a buddy who loves it!

GEM juniors are mild smooth shavers, get GEM stainless blades. Post some pix of the razor please.
