As many of you know,Merkur has a 100 years of history behind its back, and also make its shaving razors in Soligen,Germany (something that Edwin Jagger/Muhles cant say...)

The HD series are very popular, both with the short and the long handle models. The 38C HD has a long handle and also you could choose from different handle colors : blue, red, black and also the traditional one, which is chromed. This razor has the nickname of "Barber Pole" since its handle resembles the traditional Barber Poles.

The razor comes on the new cardboard box, something that Merkur have imrpoved from the old carboard box, which was very weak and ugly, lets be honest. This new box is not a piece of art,but at least is much better than the old one.

This is a stunning razor.I have seen this razor before in pictures, and I thought that it was a beautiful one,but I can tell you that when I got it,I was very, very happy, since its a beauty.
I really like its design and also is well finish, much better than I expected.Merkur suffered some problems with the finish of its razors a couple years ago,but I think this is just a problem from the past, and they also have improved their control quality.

This razor weights 100 g.The chromed version I think that weights 10 g more.

Also has a total lenght of almost 11 cm,which I find it to make a perfect balance. The 34C HD (short handle) weights 76 g and has a total length of 9 cm.Here is a pic with the 34C HD on the right. If you have big hands, the 38C HD could be a good razor for you.

This is also a 2 piece razor, with the lower part of the head fixed to the handle, like in the other HD models.

A detail of its closed comb head :

and the end part of the handle :

I have been using this razor for two days on a row,and I was expecting it to shave like the 34C HD that I own, since both seems to have the same closed comb head, but this one shaves really similar to my Edwin Jagger/Muhle or even the old Robart N15 razor, since its very smooth, smoother than the 34C HD,which is a little bit more aggressive than this one.

I really like how it shaves, since you have the smooth feeling but the enough blade exposure to make it a beard punisher and enjoy a close shave in 3 razor passes.

The balance is also perfect,or almost perfect, since I can feel how most of its weight is on the head, and not so much on the handle, once Im shaving.Thats a plus for me.

Some people have reported that this could be a slippery handle but I havent suffered that (so far) and the handle provides a good grip, but Im sure that I will get a 38C HD chromed to compare it with this.Biggrin

So far,so good and have been a good reminder for me that there is life beyond my beloved Edwin Jagger/Muhle shaving razors.

Great review! I love mine in chrome and the grip is fantastic.
This looks great in black and it's good to read that the grip has been good for you so far.

I find it easily controllable and very intuitive. In fact, it was my first DE razor and it still satisfies every time I use it.

Thank you again "Reviewmeister"! Biggrin

Looks lovely - but the real question is how it shaves Tongue
Is anyone in a position to compare it to a Merkur 25C, the Merkur 41C (aka 1904) or the Merkur 39C?

I have the 38C HD, the 39C and the 41C,(1904) but my 1904 is an Open Comb. I've never experienced the 25C.

Very different shaves for all three IMO.
The HD is a very smooth, traditional shave, slightly more aggressive than an EJDE89. It's a heavier razor which likely accounts for that though Teiste mentions that the 34 C is a bit more aggressive which surprises me, (I haven't tried that one yet).

My 39C is in a different league. A Slant that just slices the whiskers off like nobody's business. Very smooth and not overly aggressive for me as it is for some people. A different experience than the 38C HD. Both are extremely effective for me.
More efficient for me than the 38C, requiring less effort to get a BBS, especially on my neck.

Lastly, the 1904, mine an open comb is by far, much less aggressive than the other two razors. I thought the open comb aspect would equal a fairly aggressive shave but it's the least aggressive open comb that I've experience so far. It's much lighter than the other two razors you mention and while I can get a great shave with it, I find that I have to concentrate hard on the specific angle and ultimately add some extra touch ups to what would equal effortless beard removal with the other two razors.
This razor needs some more experimentation on my part but while it's a great razor and definitely one to own, I don't look at it in the same "intuitive, amazingly effective beard removal machine" category as I do the 38C HD or the 39C SledgeSlant.

I hope that helps and I apologize if I've jacked this thread at all.
And now back to the regularly scheduled Teiste review! Smile

The 25C has the same head as the 41C, just a different handle.

Very helpful, thank you Smile

Great review and pictures!

There is also one other variant, the 38M, which is chrome plated with a matte finish. This is the razor I started with last December.

I love my 38M and it remains my favorite. I have not tried many different razors, but I'd characterize it as middle of the road with regard to aggressiveness. The Tech, Superspeed, and Super Adjustable are all milder. The SABI 3 piece is more aggressive.

I also have the Merkur 42C, which I think has the same head though in a 3 piece version. The 42C is more nimble due to the lighter weight and shorter length. The 42C is probably more mild due to the lighter weight.

My son just gave me my first safety razor, the 38C HD in chrome. Am in the emergency room at the hospital. Doctors removed the razor from my neck, got the bleeding to stop, and stitched me up. The good news is that the nurse who bandaged me remarked at how smooth my skin was.

Slight miscalculation on the pressure required...........

Thanks for the review! It is a very beautiful razor there is no doubt. Maybe I should give this one a try. I recently purchased the 1904 Open Comb and it is to mild.

Great review T.

These are some of my favourite razors. I used to swear by the 34c but as soon as I got my 38N the 34c is long gone. I then got the 38M (Matt finish of 38C to match my futur) and I prefer this over the other two.

The extra 10g makes a difference in the shave I think. It is marginal. The main difference is the grip on the handle on the 38M/C, it makes it feel more sure footed compared to the other models.

If you have any if the 38 series, your on to a winner.

Edit: I commented twice! Must really like this razor!

My only problem with the Merkur is the slight, slight corrosion and lift of the chrome on the every edge of the head. Having said that, I only have the HD (oh and the closed comb travel razor which shaves even closer IMO than the HD). I emailed Merkur and they didn't respond. I wanted to buy a new head. Doesn't seem you can, judging by the cricket* ... cricket* ... Good shave though, all the same. I wanted to try the Pole, too. I might wait a little longer to see if Merkur condescends to reply.

Nice review Teiste. I've eyed those for a few years now, but for one reason or another it always seems to get knocked down the product purchase queand never quite makes it to the purchase position...one of these days.

Let us know if you think the Barber Pole provides a significantly different shave than the 34C?

I'd value your opinion.

Unfortunately I don't own the 34c - it's too short for my taste.

The 38c is my favorite razor, weight and balance are superb. I also have the 34c, and EJ89. The EJ is a beautiful piece, and shaves like a dream, but I'm not thrilled with the 34c, not aggressive enough. Seems the 34c must have a brand new Feather or Russian yellow in it at all times to be effective, whereas in the 38c I can push a blade to 3-4 shaves.

To be honest I'm not crazy about the finish and feel of my 39c and 38c razors.
The 38c was scratched all over and I have it for sale now, brand new never used.

The 39c slant I will only keep because its unique.
But it too does feel like low quality when you hold it in your hand. The handle knurlings are not as deep as they look. Clearly inferior to my Ikons, Titan, UFO, Joris, Mühle, Edwin Jagger and honestly all over razors I own.

Will maybe buy the 34G gold, then I'm done done done with this company Dodgy

Look at Teiste's close up pics. They clearly reveal the poorly finished head and overall look of the razor Sleepy
