It is the Norwegian Constitution Day today - and while I realise far from everyone celebrates it, I want to wish everyone a very happy, very nice 17th!

My town is called Thousand Oaks. Many Norwegian's settled here and handcut a twisting road still called The Norwegian grade. They grew rye to feed post WW1 Europe and you still come across it growing wild among the half hidden Chumash and Californio sites. The actor Joel McCrea bought the connected land and Gary Cooper drove his Dusenburg at speed through it, scaring McCrea to death ( I drive at best 20 MPH through it).
His comment was how much the land reminded him of his native Montana.Nearby Cal Lutheran College was founded by those Norwegians. They have an annual Scandinavian festival but this year a matron told two re enactors in Viking garb to put on ties If you want inside. A conservative lot, those Lutheran grandmothers.
My pharmacist is named Thor and was pleased I pronounced it right.
Drive down to the Port of San Pedro in Los Angeles a Norwegian church and restaurant/store play the Norwegian Anthem on a loudspeaker when a Norway flagged merchant ship comes in.
That is the Norwegian influence in my life. I could mention SOLVANG up the coast near Michael Jackson's old NEVERLAND. But they're Danes and I
can only take a bucket of butter cookies maybe once a year.

P.S. I also neglected to wear a tie. I borrowed a set of jumper cables from my friend's car and draped them in a loose knot. She looked at me and said ' O.K. you can come in, but DON'T YOU START ANYTHING'!!!!!
Happy 17th

The celebration have evolved over time, naturally, but one thing that is often commented on by people from the Continent is the non-military nature of it (y'all from the US should be able to relate). There is children's parades in all major and minor cities and towns (and villages, and pretty much where ever there is more than two houses...). In some parts of Norway there is a tradition for a Citizen Parade as well, and there is usually a family gathering in the afternoon. National costumes and flags all over the place, naturally.

Quite a few pictures of Norwegians celebrating at http://www.nrk.no/17mai/se-alle-17.-mai-...1.12949471 - not all from Norway, but we tend to celebrate it even harder when we're abroad Tongue

I had a quick look at that #1 picture and figured that was a  Confederate flag. But then I looked again and got it right.

Happy Day, Noway People!
