Poll: When you use both an aftershave and a balm together, which do you apply first?

I don't always use AS, and don't always use balm. Sometimes I use one or the other, and sometimes I use both.

When I use both, I apply the AS first, followed by the balm.  I do this because I find the cleaning and anti-septic properties important to use first before applying something that nourishes and moisturizes, and I suspect that applying an aftershave after a balm would diminish the nourishing effects of the balm. I suspect most people do the same.

However,  I just read that another respected member seems to prefer doing the opposite. This may be preferred to avoid the initial burn that you get with the AS, and go to nourishment right away, and only afterwards clean and sterilize. Plus, one might prefer the more refined, diverse scents of aftershaves that one might lose after covering it up with a balm.

So, when you use aftershaves and balms together, which do you apply first, and why?

From what I have read, the best way to apply multiple products in the most effective way is to do them in the lightest (or thinnest) consistency to thickest. So I do splashes first, then I apply balsam or balms second. If I choose, then I may decide to pat talc (powder) on my face.

So I think you have the right idea.

I am old school. A manly man faces cold steel and then cauterizes any wound with alcohol aftershave. Then he sits down to nourish his skin from the inside by way of biscuits and sausage gravy with black coffee Piggy_214

I must put this thread back on track. Traditional alcohol based AS does a fine job of killing any pathogens on freshly shaved skin. The caveat is it is also a drying agent and will inflict it's own damage. This is why balms are  applied next. Now we have the potential of fouling the aesthetic scent of the AS. At this stage a full strength EDT/Cologne is applied strategically on the earlobes to draw ladyfriends within harm's way.

I do balm first, then splash.

After splash I use a moisturizer cream.

I don't apply alcohol directly to an unprotected face, because it does not feel good.
The balm will protect the skin from the splash, yet you still get the freshness from the splash.

Seconded.  And one should take pride in the fact that no skinny-jean wearing, bearded hipster would do the same.  Double kudos for highlighting the nutritional aspects.

I don't use both together, and what's more,  fwiw, when I was shaving  with multi blade razors and using canned foam I used balms predominantly.  Now I used splashes almost exclusively.  Almost.

After shaves applied after balms will wash away the moisturizing properties.

Agreed.

But I only use my balm to protect my skin against the splash, which I love so much.
I prepare my skin for the splash  Biggrin

After the splash, I will use my Osmium and Biotherm skin care products.
They work much better than any AS balm bar none.

Talcum powder is so underrated.   Love me some talc in the summer.

Sausage gravy & biscuits are "year-round" nutrition for me.
