Between 25 to 30 years ago, I tried to shave with a straight razor. Sadly, there were no resources then to learn how to properly shave with a straight razor (or a DE for that matter). So I bought a razor for $23.85 and winged it. I won't bore you with the bloodletting. Needless to say I put the razor away and never touched it again. Today, I found it and was wondering if anyone could tell me about it.

On one side of the razor it says "Original Bartmann" over "Solingen Germany", on the other side it is stamped "86" (or "98"?). It is 6.25 inches long folded and the blade looks between .625 and .75 inches wide.

Is this a decent razor? I appreciate any information you can give me.

Thanks in advance,
Marc

Yes, like almost all German made razors from Solingen,
Bartmann's are great shavers.
I have a couple and they are indeed very good razors.
Pictures would be great, but they are very nice indeed.
If you want to have it honed to give it another go, I'd be happy to hone it for you, for the price of shipping.

I have two jpgs of the razor, but I cannot seem to add them as attachments. When I press add attachments button the browser just hangs. Any suggestions?

After you hit add attachment does a button come up below that says "insert inline"? If so that is what you need to hit. It will insert pic wherever you cursor is at the time. Also, if you hit preview thread after you will not be able to see pic so don't worry about that. If that dose not work try making pic smaller to 640x480.

Superblue posted the pictures for me. He suggested using a web service to store the image and loading it off the web. I set up Picasa and ran a test that was successful. I tried the Add Attachment button again and got the same result, a hang and no other buttons appear. Picasa works so I will use it in the future, but what's going on with the Add Attachments function? Huh

I love my Bartmanns. Bart means beard in some European language.

They are good shavers, I reduced my collection of straights to only 7 this year and two of those are Bartmanns, so .....

They take a great edge and give me excellent shaves.

Yes, gentlemen, the Bartmann is a great razor from the olden days. Marc, have yours restored and shave away. Snuff, your Bartmanns are beauties.

Yes these are excellent razors. The pair in the pics above are superb, particularly the second with the feathered top edge of the tip. I bet they are consistent and favourite shavers in his rotation. I'd love to give them a go!
