Czech and Speake, one of the famous UK brands, which was born in 1978,and is located on the also famous Jermyn Street in London.

Thanks to Phil I had the chance to try out this great shaving soap, made in Italy by Valobra, the same company behind the soaps for Art of Shaving.

The ingredients of this shaving soap are :

which are basically the same than the Art of Shaving soaps :

and the famous Valobra shaving stick :

So we have a triple milled, tallow based shaving soap, full of tallow goodness for the tallow lovers!

The soap refill comes on a carboard box with a puck of 90 grams,9 grams less than the Art of Shaving soaps.

However this soap contains one of the best scents I have tried.Yes,I do admit it,Im a lavender scent fan.Actually is my favorite scent.I love lavender and Czech and Speake Oxford and Cambridge offers a fresh lavender (both English and French) scent with some deep earthy notes.I thought that it was gonna be tough to distinghish it on the shaving soap, but I can tell you that the notes are there.Of course, there's a clay note, which is something than the Art of Shaving soaps also have, due,(I guess),to the tallow on it.

Is very easy to make lather from this shaving soap : ok,its a triple milled shaving soap, and we have to load the brush well,if we wanna enjoy a ultra creamy lather, but using the Wet Shaving Products 2250 silvertip brush was very easy (this brush is another case of soap mass murderer due to its strong and firm backbone) and here is the lather I made out of it :

As you can guess,I enjoyed a perfect shave, very aromatic, with creamy and slick lather, and,to be honest, like the kind of shave I enjoy when I use Valobra and Art of Shaving soaps. But again, the Oxford and Cambridge scent is there and Im just sold to it.

I have the Art of Shaving lavender soap and compare it to this, its scent is not as "sophisticated" or complex,I would say,so that's a plus for the C&S one.

So,is it worth it?Well, this is the question that we always ask.For a friend who is a passionate of Valobra/Art of Shaving and Czech and Speake soaps,it is.The scents of these soaps are playing on a superior league, basically in the same league than Floris or Penhaligons soaps, but the C&S ones use tallow, and that's another plus for many.

I see shaving as a time to treat yourself right. Some people do it with Arko with good results, but If I have the chance to do it with something better, with a superior, intoxicating wonderful scent,Im going for it,and the Czech and Speake soap is a clear example of that.

Well done,Valobra,very well done!

I agree with Teiste. This is an excellent soap with a sophisticated scent. The lathering potential far exceeds Penhaligon's current formulation. A great review of this soap, Teiste!

Oxford & Cambridge and No. 88 are two of my favorite soaps. You hit it on the head, Teiste. Performance is top notch - basically the same as AOS and Valobra stick. But the scents of these two soaps really set them apart.

I was lucky enough to receive a sample of Oxford and Cambridge last year, and it's one of those products you ration out and hate to see the end of. It will probably become my favorite soap, when at last my wife is working again.

(Incidentally, when I look over my "when at last my wife is working again" list, it's obvious the poor dear is going to need a second job!)

Here's the description of no. 88 from the C&S website:

... No.88 has a fresh, woody top note of reviving and uplifting bergamot, the richness and warmth of geranium, rose otto, cassie and exotic frangipani. Combined with dry base notes of vetiver and sandalwood...

Rose plays more of a key role in the scent, but it's a very complex scent that manages not to be very floral. I think of Spring/Summer with Oxford & Cambridge and Fall/Winter with no. 88.

88 is a spicy, dark rose.

Great review!

#88 is my favorite EdT (pre-reformulation was even better but the new one is still great) so I'm waiting for a certain enabler to get the #88 soap in stock.Biggrin

I hope that it's a case of the different scents having the same soap formulas considering O&C is so good.

This is the case. The no. 88 performs equally to the O&C.

Looks like you have some good carpenters skill set. Now, if there was a way to make a mini-bowl for mini-pucks Sisi Eusa_whistle

I'm pretty sure those are the same bowls I put mine in. You are correct - the pucks fit perfectly.

No...I am all thumbs. These bowls are actually made for MWF but they fit the C&S (as well as AOS) shave soap refills perfectly.

Harvey had an idea for the mini pucks and I may investigate that further.

Excellent review. I should be receiving the Cambridge some time later this month. Purchased it a while ago from a member at a previous forum.
