Brushes have different characteristics depending upon the type of fiber (badger, horse, synthetic, boar), the size of the knot, the size of the loft. A rule of thumb is that short loft brushes tend to make better face latherers, while long loft brushes make better bowl latherers. If I want to face lather I might want to grab my Vie Long Horse, if I want to bowl lather I might want to grab my Super Badger, if I want to just mix it up and guess, I might grab my H.I.S. or Muhle 25.

I hope this provides more insight.

Well, you need two to make sure the other one completely dries in between uses. Same with shoes.

Okay, maybe brushes dry quicker....

As for the rest... uh... no one needs more than 2 brushes. But it sure is interesting to shave with a different feel of brush each morning.

Try them all?

I need more criteria to make a good recommendation. Simpsons are well stuffed and super soft, but extra expensive. Shavemac is a great all around brush. Kent is pretty floppy. Semogue non-HD is sparsely populated with hair, the HD version is extra expensive. Handles are very ergonomic, but the wood varnish cracks over the years.

Vulfix is pretty similar to TGN/custom knots. Omega is about equal with Vulfix.

I'll let you know about Rooney & Thater two bands in a little bit.

All IMO.

Do you want to concentrate on face lathering, bowl lathering, or an overall performer (one that can do a little of both but not a master of one)?

Variety is the spice of life. I have different brushes and I really enjoy the different characteristics of each of them. Lately I seem to be on a Simpson's kick and I'm really enjoying the soft tips, densely stuffed knot and the short loft.

You could just interpret that as you care more about your face than your feet. Nothing wrong with that.

Honestly though, unless you care about your shoes, it doesn't matter if you wear the same pair every day.

I usually use a scuttle I'm spoiled with warm lather and I since I can't use hard soaps in with a scuttle I stick with creams but that doesn't mean I don't like soaps I just don't have any at the moment to use

Well, you have some good options then :

-Simpson Duke 3 in best badger

-Semogue SOC in two band badger

-shavemac 177 silvertip

-Vie Long Bullgoose Beehive LE silvertip.

Those brushes have knots between 24/25 mm (the 177 is 23,5mm) and are perfect for bowl lathering,as well as "multitask" shaving brushes. They also have good prices, specially the Semogue and Vie Long silvertip, which has one of the most luxurious silvertip hair out there.
The Simpson Duke 3 is simply a classic of classics and the shavemac 177 is a well all around performer, specially with shaving creams.

I don't think it's why does one "need" more brushes as it's not an essential thing, but having an assortment of brushes adds versatility, can give some benefits to your shave, and it's simply more fun Smile
