So there's no denying that when the word DENSITY is used in reference to a shaving brush, that for most, the Simpsons line of brushes, in particular the Chubbies, epitomize this very quality.

And whether you like it or not, one things for sure, you get the most badger for your money when you buy a Simpson. So with the Chubby, clearly earning the no.1 spot on the list, which other 4 Simpson models would you rank below the Chubby on the density ladder. And to be clear, let's stick with their 3 band variety, namely their Best grade of hair but feel free to make an agrument for their Super if you so desire.

1) Chubby
2) Duke ??
3) Polo ??
4) Persian Jar ??!
5) Tulip ??

I'm missing a polo and duke.

What about the Colonel?

The PJ is slightly less dense than my Tulip. Honestly, I wouldn't call the PJ terribly dense. That said, I don't have any others.

This could vary so much. Harvard vs. Persian Jar for instance.

And remember the Classic. That might well be the 2nd most dense after the Chubbies.

The Chubby is by far the densest Simpsons brush. I think the Classic series comes in a close second. Perhaps the Duke series is next? Or the Fifties?

When you get into the Polos and the Tulips, you are dealing with taller lofted brushes. This changes the whole dynamic.

I don't have any experience with the Polo series. Yet.

I can only speak for the Simpsons brushes that I've owned, but they'd go in the following order:

Chubby 2 Best
Tulip 3 2band
Duke 2 Best
Berkeley 46 Best
Special Pure

IMHO the Chubby 2 Best was too dense, and I'd love something in 2band that was slightly more dense than my T3. I'd love to find that sweet spot brush some day, but my T3 is honestly pretty fantastic! Biggrin

I'd put them on a scale of 1-10, as that gives a bit more clarity than just ranking 5. Please note that the feeling of density is also a function of the hair type.

Chubby 2 2-Band: - 10
Chubby 2 - Manchurian: - 10
Classic 1 2-band: 9
Classic 2 Best: 9
Tulip 3 2-band: 8
Polo 10 Manchurian: 8
Polo 8 2-band: 7
Polo 8 Super: 6
Duke 3 Best: 5
Commodore X3: 5
Duke 1 Best: 4
Jubilee: 4

Be interesting to see what you guys come up with.

Once you've got your list together I'll let you know our (the family's not the company's) take on the 'Densest Simpson List'

Chubby and Classic are definitely the densest I've tried; kind of on a different level from everything else.

We can't speak for the company prior to the Carter era, however all our grammes per knot ratios were handed over in documentation during the business acquistion.

That said, these were tailored once more by us to increase the badger!

The densest is the Chubby 3 Manchurian.

Runner-ups in descending order are Chubby 3 in Super 3-band, Chubby 2 in Super 2-band and Chubby 3 in Super 2-band.

Interesting, especially keen to learn where you designed the GYLE to be in terms of density!

My list would be:

B&B Eagle G3 in best
Limited Edition '57' in super badger
M7 in Manchurian
Wee Scot in Best
Emperor 3 in three band silvertip
Duke 3 in pure (vintage)
Berkeley in pure (vintage)

I think our perception of density is influenced not only by the sheer number of hairs packed into a knot, but also by the loft of the knot. To that end, a Classic 1 or 2 has a short loft, so it feels more dense to me. And I think we are comparing apples and oranges when we compare different hair grades to one another. My CH2 in Super 3-band seems more dense to me than my CH2 in Best. I like how yellafella listed his different knots separately.

That all being said, here's my stab at it, mentioning only the models I have owned:

Chubby
.
.
.
Classic
GYLE
Duke
Polo
Astor
Wee Scot
Tulip
Persian Jar
55
Emperor

I have had Chubby 2s in all of the hair types and rank them in order of density (greatest to least):
3-band Super
Manchurian
Best
2-band Super

Apples to oranges, though - I don't think a 2-band would "work" if packed like a 3-band.

My apologies for digging up an old thread.
Hi, Andrew if base on your estimation let say the 3 band Super is 100% dense then how much are the rest comparing to the 3 band Super in percentage? Why the 2-band would not "work" if packed like a 3-band? It will be too stiff?
Thank you.
