This is fantastic advice, and I have to continually make myself do this. I find that I quit too soon on the face lathering, and I pay for it post shave.

Thanks for coaching me up, Primo.

Great post.  Glad it got bumped.  I'd put this up there with Merkur Man's lather building post/video.  Great advice from each!

Thanks Primo!
Much better today after reading the post. I tried to use the same size dollop of cream, added a bit of water (like yesterday), then added a bit of water twice more as I whipped. Lather looked pretty much the same or maybe a bit fluffier, but no residue on the blade when rinsing. I appreciate the encouragement, I'll keep working on it.

The trick, for me, was adding the right amount of water, at the right time.  Too much water, too quickly, even though the lather might be able to be saved, is still inferior to adding just a bit of water, at a time, throughout the shave.

I typically add water 7 times to the lather, before touching the lather, to my face.

If you add too much water too quickly, just start building the lather on your face, then go back to the puck and load for a while more.

These days, I use merkur-man's 'build the lather on the puck' method to very consistent success. (lots of soap, lots of water, but built very slowly).
