HI guys,
I really want to buy the shiny stainless steel version of the Mongoose. I hear they dont make them any longer. So I am hoping to pick one up in the B/S/T section.
However could someone please tell me the difference between the old and the new? I understand that the new ones are lighter. I personally like a heavy razor.
Thanks in advance for any input.

First off, you have to decide if you want a heavy razor or a light razor. There are Stainless Steel and Aluminum. I had a polished B3 in Stainless and it was 140g. I found it too heavy and I just sold it. If you are really into the heavy razors you might like it. There are a number of used Stainless Steel ones popping up on the BST for reasonable prices. There is also a new Stainless Steel version with a lower profile head which is a tad lighter.

As for difference in batches 1,2, and 3, it depends upon who you talk to regarding the shave. Some say there is a difference. Others say there isn't. The biggest technical difference between the batches has to do with the length of the pins upon which you place the razor. The pins have increased in length with each batch.
I haven't used the alumigoose. So, I won't speak to its shave. But, the aluminum one is lighter and cheaper.
So, what do you want? Weight? Material? Color?
You can get polished or brushed on the stainless steel versions. You can get Anodized black in the aluminum.
They all provide great shaves. Good luck on your search.

I second all that gp569900 says. I spent a lot of time looking at online reviews of Cobras and Mongeeses before picking up my satin Mongoose B3 on eBay. I like a heavy razor (unsteady hands require the extra intertia, plus I like to feel that I am using the instrument). So, the lighter Alumigoose wasn't really an option.
The Alumigoose and the new ""Mongoose II" share a slightly smaller head. (In batches 1,2 and 3, the handle screws into the center of the head - in Alumigoose and MongooseII they have removed some of the 'back' of the razor so the handle screws in more toward the back. It's not a large difference - I think the Mongoose II head is only 3gm lighter than the B 1,2 & 3.
But if you want the polished finish, you really want B 1,2 or 3, as they dropped it for Mongoose II, and the 'polished' Alumigoose isn't really the same.
Nothing wrong with Batch 1, really, but there aren't many of them, and it was a trial run. Batch 2 introduced the guide pins for the blade, and Batch 3 lengthened them to the (better/best) configuration they have used ever since for everything.
So if you ask me, you are definitely looking for a polished Batch 3, but would probably be happy with polished Batch 2. Unless a heavy solid stainless steel razor isn't a deal breaker . . .
