I have no idea why I didn't think of this before...
So I've been using a DE for just over three years and last night I figured out something that I had not known before.
If I hold the razor toward at bottom of the pole (opposite from the head/blade) while shaving, the pressure applied to my skin is much less than if I hold the razor further up the pole.
As a result, which we all know, LESS IRRITATION!
Dramatically different... Not just a little different.

I'm sure half of you already do this and know this. And the other half were just like me. Give it a try and let us know how it goes. Thanks!

I always keep my pinky finger underneath the handle.

after these last 3 years the one thing I can't agree with for myself is what handle I want with which razor. I trade handles across heads all the time.  probably could settle for a couple but no fun in that for me. " elite" beaver hair imbedded handle, mokume gane, heavy, small, charcoal razor dimpled you name it.  I found Toby and triad pretty early and love his handles especially.   I think I can safely say that people on this board recognize and enjoy great machining

I hold it like caveman should ... close fisted.   Tongue But really I try to hold it from the end that's not sharp.  Sisi1

I have always done that too, but I'm referring to REALLY getting down to the bottom so the thumb and index and middle fingers are within the bottom inch.

I keep my index and middle fingers where the balance point of the razor is very loosely and tilt the handle out so as to get as shallow of an angle with the blade.

Gotcha. If you hold it "lower", there should be less pressure, all else equal.

Since the weight of the razor is on my pinky finger, the other fingers I think are more for just keeping the razor steady and balanced. If I moved my fingers to the bottom of the handle, I don't think that I would be able to maintain the same level of control.

It used to seem that way to me too (hence I always used to hold the razor with a tight grip too), but I was surprised that not much changed in that respect.

I'm always holding it on the neck; I'm going to try this.

Yes, it works very well. Alas, I end up not holding it by the end of the handle if the razor is not too aggressive.
