R1 or S1, which one would you pick?

Lots of people like the R1, but I've seen people say the S1 is a game changer.

I bought a Merkur 39C aka Sledgehammer thinking I would love a slant. I didn't like it; others love it. Have you used a slant before, and if so, how do you like it?

l would choose the R1. I own it, and really like it. I have the ikon x3 slant and am not too jazzed about it. I thought slant must be better and it turned out it wasn't. On the contrary others would tell you exact opposite.

Spudnut's post is worth your consideration.

I've got a really low mileage Merkur slant.  My opinion is that the R1 could be, and would be, a daily shaver.  A slant is a novelty for occasional use.  But, hey, that's just my opinion.  I would  choose an R1 hands down over a slant anything.

You get to choose.

For me, the Above the Tie R1 has just the right blade exposure and level of aggressiveness. It is my favorite DE razor. But the S1 comes very close, and it is also a pleasure to use.

I've got an R1 in the bronze set, and for me the handle is too short giving it a balance I just don't care for. On the other hand, I've got an S1 on a Kronos handle which for me gives it just the right balance. The feel on the face, for me, is far better with the S1 than the R1. I use Med preps in both. I'd love to see if Stan would make a bronze Kronos handle. That just might make the R1 a daily driver type, which it isn't for me. The S1 is definitely a daily driver. The shaves I get with mine are BBS, long lasting, and very comfortable on my face.

Funny you mention that I also have the bronze set. #45 and I find the handle too short as well. A half inch or so longer would have been nice. I have since adjusted my grip and the razor gives flawless shaves with the R1 plate.

I three have the ATT Bronze set, as well as the S1 with a Kronos handle.  The R1 is definitely the better of the two for me.  I, also found the Atlas handle too short and was able to obtain a bronze 3.5 inch handle that works perfectly.  As an aside, I contacted Stan at ATT and he told me that he did not have any more of the bronze to make a longer handle.

I'm sure anyone with a lathe and some bronze roundstock could turn out a bronze handle to your required length. I might contact my local machine shop and inquire.

I actually like the length of the Atlas handle and would not want one any longer. I think it makes the razor ready to maneuver and gives it the head heavy balance that I like.

I like to feel the blade. It helps guide. For that reason S1 was not of my liking and the R1 is.
If you want a slant, try a merkur/ hoffritz.

To me, the ATT S1 doesn't shave like any of the other slants on the market. I find most of them to have a more aggressive feel, and as others have mentioned, the S1 is actually more mild feeling. To me, it feels like a smoother R1. I love it for that reason, but I understand that some people prefer the blade feel.

I can't speak to the R1, but the S1 is a top tier razor for me.  Very very smooth razor, nicely efficient and I can use it with a variety of blades, although my go to with it is a Feather.  Quick story about that, I do not like the feel of a Feather DE blade in any other razor and for some reason just decided to use it in my S1.  No problem!  Might be the rigidity of the slant keeping the thinner Feather more sturdy but wow.  The S1 is a legend.  Never tried the R1 but from what I hear, the S1 shaves just as efficiently, but with a less aggressive feeling on the face.

I only used a Feather blade in my AS-D2 until today.  Because of your post I tried it in my S1.  It was perfect.  Just enough added aggression to make it perfect.  Thanks for the suggestion, now the S1 shaves as close as the R1, but still different enough to make both keepers.

For those with an S1 have any of you also tried the Maggard slant and compare the two? I have a Maggard slant and think it's great for the price. Wondering if the S1 will provide a little better shave - not that there is anything wrong with the Maggard.
