I recently said Savonnerie du bon Berger Volcans stick at around $17 is the poor man's SMN (Santa Maria Novella) around $71 if you can find it. Yesterday I grated the stick and smashed the soap into a bowl and now create an absolutely incredible lather. The lather straight from the stick was an A+, 10 of 10s so I was not complaining before.

Not a great value proposition, but the additional $54 for SMN gets you a lovely scent. SDV's peppermint scent is not unpleasant, but it does feel rather flat in comparison.

This is what I've done from day one and find it works great and makes excellent lather. (Just I don't grate, I usually just cut into chunks and press with my thumbs or knuckles.)

... But also, as mentioned, the scents are quite different.
SdV stick is pretty much just a natural mint.
SMN is their tobacco cologne with added camphor (I believe) and eucalyptus.
Both very enjoyable in their own rights!

I owned all 6 SDV Bon Berger pots, but becasuee the pots are too small to my likings and the soap was not easily removed from the pot, I sold all my pots.

Also the labels fell off on 4 out the 8 pots I owned, so I had to superglue them.

The soap is great stuff.

The presentation frankly sucks.

Did you try the stick?

I'm living through a bathroom remodel so my gear is packed away, save for my Volcans stick pressed into a tin and a tin of Mike's to last through the project.  I suppose this is as close to answering the "desert island" conundrum as I will come.

Agree 100%.  I also agree that the scent of SMN is intoxicating and one of my favorites.  I do, however, like the natural mint scent of the Volcans Stick.  I rate the soap very highly, among the very best.
