I like the Plisson type synthetic knots, as they have the backbone lacking in the original Plisson knot.  There are now a number of excellent, moderately priced brushes with Plisson type knots.  While these brushes represent a great value, their handles are their weak point.  I'm not aware of a regular production brush with a Plisson type knot and a handle of the same quality as a Simpson, Shavemac, Thater or M&F.   Going custom was the only way to go to get such a combination, so I decided to have Bob Quinn (Elite Razor) make me a custom brush with a 24mm Plisson type knot.

For a handle material I chose Bob's striped ivory in a material called alternate casein.  I have a number of 2-band brushes in this material and it is quite nice.  I asked for a 55mm loft, which led to a discussion of the glue bump.  It seems that all the Plisson type knots add backbone with a large glue bump.  Bob did some measurements for me.  The knot was 67mm tall, but the free loft, measured down the center of the knot to the top of the glue bump, was 45mm.  At my selected loft of 55mm, there would be a glue bump of about 10mm over the top of the handle.  Bob gave me option of reducing the exposed glue bump by lowering the loft.  However, based on my experience with synthetic knots, I felt that this knot would work best for me at a 55mm loft.  I opted to accept the glue bump in order to get what I thought was the loft this knot needed.

The finished brush is superb.  For me, the loft is ideal at 55mm, and the handle is beautiful.  The first picture that follows is Bob's, and the rest are mine.

I now have a brush with a Plisson type knot in a handle comparable in quality to any of the top tier brushes.

Lovely brush. I have two brush handles from Bob, and I'm sure there will be more. His work is outstanding.
