Today's shave was not as smooth as usual and I could not figure out why. I was using a Blackbird razor which I love, I had a great lather from Tabula Rasa and I was using a relatively fresh Permasharp Super Blade. After one pass, it was clear that this was not going to be a stellar shave. When I went to change the blade, this is what I found.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I think I saw it in an old Twilight Zone.

Haha. I disposed of the second part of the blade before it dawned on me to take a picture. I have never had a blade break in half while in the razor.

I had a something similar happen to me this morning.  Was out surfing my favorite reefbreak in north Malibu area; my board felt squirrely and I flipped it over to see I'd lost the fins on one side of the board!  I'd broken them off on the reef without feeling it... Sad

I'm not judging and maybe I'm just OCD, but I remove my blade every time after a shave to clean and rinse both blade and razor. I let air dry separate. This offers me the time to look over my blade and keeps my blades from rusting in my razor. It could be due to me purchasing vintage razor and it always drove me nuts to see a filthy rusty bade inside a razor. No offense to anyone, as I said I maybe crazy.

As to it breaking, chalk it up to manufacture defect prior to heat treat and flex of razor cause it to snap.

Sounds costly. I really wouldn't know; lived most of my life landlocked. Always looked like fun though.

It could have been worse, the fins released properly so the board wasn't damaged.  A new set of fins ain't cheap, though.   Facepalm

That's never happened to me, but I can see where that caused some discomfort.

I've had a blade snap before but never a break end to end. Only ever seen one split at one end to the hollow point in the middle.

I've heard it pop once. Tightened the handle too much on my Tradere. Replaced it before using it. A Feather blade I think.
Also have had a blade feel funny on the second or third shave too in another razor. Different blade and razor blade but I don't remember what kinds. That time I did notice but it wasn't across and totally in two pieces either.

I also think it's the blade more than the razor. Maybe too thin or bad tempering?

How often do you change blades, Phil? That's some pretty significant rust right there.

Broke in half while inside? Omg. Good thing it didn't cause you more injury.

I haven't had that happen, but once my Muhle R89 was very aggressive, so I stopped, and found the two pieces of the head were separating! Caught it before I cut my face.

No offense Phil, but..... ewww.  Did it break, or did the rust simply dissolve it?

Says the guy without hard water.

Rust, or tea stains, are a part of life if you have hard water I'm afraid.

I've seen worse. On blades with one shave after one day in a clean razor.

Yes, I have very hard water. The blade only was used twice. Tea stains are a part of life

The blade was used twice on consecutive days. It is a hard water issue combined with a SS razor. It isn't exactly rust... just tea stains
