I have recently visited our favorite e-auction site and found a pack of 3 pucks of AOS tallow formula [sandalwood] for $34.17. This seems kind of low for such a highly regarded soap that is out of production.

Do you think it's a scam or is $11/puck sound right? When it was new it was at least twice that. What say you?

It's a legit price; I scored a dozen pucks and they are superb.
I presume AoS liquidated remaining stock to a wholesaler, hence the low price.

I concur with Ravi. Not a fraud. Get them before I do!!!!
I received a PM last night regarding how to get these soaps, and that is the exact advice I gave.
Enjoy!

My addition is due Monday.

I find it interesting as i peruse wet shaving sites that so many people detest AoS products.  I can't understand this.  I can only concur that they have never used them for any period of time or that they have absolutely no idea what they are doing.  AoS makes excellent products.  I even like their latest soap base, now don't get me wrong, it is not as good as their tallow base, but I can get an excellent hydrating lather from it without any trouble.

Agreed.  While I have not used their current soap, the AOS cream is a fantastic cream.

In today's artisan-oriented market perhaps AOS being a chain stigmatizes them.  Also, they are, IMHO, somewhat overpriced.

Same here, this is how I got my three pucks several months ago. It's great that it's up again. Mine came in brown pouches.

How do you guys work with these pucks? Do you grate them (cheese grater?) into a jar, or try and jam them into a bowl?

I bought an AoS soap w bowl ie currently available nontallow version; and ditched the puck.
Tallow puck fits perfectly.

I grate it.

I bought the unscented though.

If you are up to it try this.
  • Grate some unscented AOS tallow soap into a bowl or shave mug with a tight fitting lid. A quarter or half puck is plenty. (Red frosting lids fit very well on vintage Old Spice mugs.)
  • Press down shaved soap loosely. Not firmly. Just get the stragglers into the container and level everything out a bit.
  • Add a generous amount of your favorite cologne or aftershave. 1 - 2 ounces.
  • Add water to bring the liquid to the same level as the soap.
  • Replace the lid.
  • Wait a few days.
  • Check and stir with a chopstick or small utensil.
  • Add more water if desired.
  • Wait a day or two more if needed until you get an even consistency when stirred up.

You'll end up with a nice croap or cream depending on how much you want to hydrate the soap that has the scent you want.

I have done this before twice as the unscented AOS tallow soap, to me, smells a little odd by itself. That and after a few years tends to be on the dry and hard side needing a lot of work or pre soaking to perform easier.

If you don't have a grater, the AoS tallow can be pressed/shaped to fit a container with the thumbs/knuckles.

Did anyone in this thread score an extra puck they'd like to sell to a fellow Nooker?  I've been meaning to get one.

Great soap at a great price. I picked up several pucks the last time they were available. I cannot believe that he still has stock.
