"The Unboxing"

My Oristo Sheen arrived today!

I really, really like the looks of this razor. And I do like the presentation. I'm not sure why there isn't more excitement about this razor. It's beautifully crafted, and certainly does look like it will deliver a comfortable shave.

It will likely be a week or so before I actually try it, as I have some other razors lined up I want to shave with first- but looking forward to it!! Smile

To me, it looks like reissue of the Black Mamba, with a slight redesign of the base plate. I believe it also comes from the greater Toronto area, so it seems likely that maybe the same machinist is involved. Joe stated pretty clearly that he was done with the design. I'm curious how the two compare, because the BM is a very good shave.

Agreed Craig. They look very, very similar. I shaved with my Mamba for the fist time today, and what a great shave.

Have they developed a website for ordering yet because I think the kickstarter campaign ended.

Yes. You can order them on Stashedandfound.com
Just note the prices listed are Canadian. So the Sheen is listed at $199 cad which was about $165 USD, something like that.

Here are a few pics with a blade. As you can see, a very little overhang on the sides. To me, it's almost identical to the Black Mamba with respect to the blade loading and exposure - and that's a great thing IMO!

Yup, very Black Mamba-ish if not almost identical. BM is a very good razor, and if this shaves anywhere close to that, then it's certainly a good buy. Not sure I like the the looks of the handle, but that's a very easy fix.

Enjoy, can't wait to read your review

If this is a stainless BM, that would be awesome.  Would love to see a side by side comparison of the two.

Just watched a video on their website where they compare the Oristo to the build they called their "initial version" and at another point they referred to the Oristo's "coated predecessor."

I think it's safe to say that these guys made the Black Mamba, and the Oristo is their 2.0.

Hmm this is really strange. I seem to recall reading on Reddit when Joe mentioned that razor designs was not patentable and this was a copy of the design.

I'm confused, but still interested. If they could improve upon the Black Mamba, then it's really a great razor.  The BM was one heck of a razor but I don't recommend it often cause it wasn't easily available.

First save with with the Oristo Sheen:

I can pretty much sum this up one way.....if you like the RazoRock Black Mamba and/or you have sensitive skin and enjoy a mild and comfortable shave, then you will want to buy an Oristo (I'm actually thinking about getting a backup!).

Today's shave was with Proraso Green Cream, the Oristo Sheen and a Personna Red blade (on its second shave). I had 3 days growth to mow down. I used some Proraso Green preshave, then lathered up. The first pass was WTG and my first thought was: smooooth. The razor just glides with seemed zero friction. There was still a decent amount of stubble after the first pass, but about what I was expecting knowing this is a mild razor. The second pass was XTG. I feel I could have done some touch ups and stopped for a DFS, but as I only shave a few times a week, I'm a 3 pass shaver. The third and final pass was ATG and left me with a close BBS shave with no irritation. This razor is a new favorite of my modern razors, and right up there with my Timeless OC .68, and the Hone 15 (not counting my beloved B&R Adjustable, as it's adjustable and therefore incomparable).

I can't see anyone regretting this razor unless you really like aggressive shaves with a lot of blade feel. But even if you do, this would make a great addition for your rotation to use on days you want a quick shave and might have a light beard or otherwise irritated skin. For me personally, 2016 brought some amazing new razors. Let's see what 2017 brings us!

Monkey, thanks for the review.  Would love to hear your thoughts about how it compares to the .68 Timeless as these are the two razors I have on my very short list.  Is the Timeless more efficient?  I have a Wolfman DC (std gap) that I use as my "aggressive" razor and currently use a RR Baby Smooth and Muhle 89 when looking for something milder.

Cheers,

Alex

Hi Alex. I'd say the Oristo is a tad more mild than the Timeless OC .68, but not by much. Both deliver a comfortable shave. The Oristo is slick and just glides across the face, while the Timeless OC creates channels that leave behind some soap, making multiple passes at the same area comfortable. I feel the Oristo and Timeless are milder than my Baby Smooth, and certainly milder and more comfortable than my EJ 87, but YMMV. You can't go wrong with either razor. If I had to choose between the two it would be a huge dilemma!!

Good luck and let us know what you decide on!

Ward

How much was this razor, and whence is it available?  Sounds tempting to me.  I like mild razors.

All four models available on their website stashedandfound.com (this is not Kickstarter) price for the polished model for US delivered is about $158.95(after CAD to USD conversion)

The polished version with USA shipping is $158.95. The other 3 versions are about $187.00 with shipping.

Thanks Ward!  Good to know you have a BS, and can compare.  I find the BS to have a very unique feel in that you feel the blade more than other razors but it doesnt ever feel aggressive.  I do wish it had a more slick finish -- I find the black anodizing to be a bit grabby.  Sounds like either a polished timeless or Oristo stealth would be great.  I'm not pulling the trigger right now, but when I do I'll report back.

Cheers,

Alex
