Hello. I've noticed on youtube shaving videos that many guys use Thayers before the aftershave. Can I apply an alum block, rinse the alum block and then Thayers and then aftershave? Or would it be to irritating for the skin? There is also Thayers toners and Thayers astringents. What is the difference?

Thayers astringents contain alcohol & Thayers toners do not. Both are excellent products! I don't see a problem with your plan but the only way to know for sure is to give it a try. Good luck!

I no longer use alum on my face. However, when I did, I would use the alum and then apply an astringent Witch Hazel.

Thayer's toner is wonderful stuff in my opinion.  I rarely use alum, except on the occasion that I knick myself, but I use Thayer's toner everyday prior to any other aftershave product.

I follow the same regimen Smile

I only use alum, when I nick myself.

Alum removes all the residual slickness, and I'm not looking for that, so can't see why you would use Alum after each shave to be honest, even though a lot of Youtube shavers do that, I don't.

However I now use Thayers after my shave. It's great. But it does not remove all slickness from my face, like the Alum does.

YMMV

If you're going to combo up, then: alum, witch-hazel/thayers, aftershave, and finally balm. Most folks don't need that many steps. I use thayers/humphreys every day regardless of shaving... just good for the skin.

Although my process varies from day to day when I do use Thayer's I usually go with an alum/thayer's/aftershave routine.  I really don't see much sense in using both AS and balm so if I am using balms (winter) I primarily go from shave directly to balm and skip everything else.

I like alum for basically 2 reasons.  First it gives me feedback after my shave as to which part of my face I may have overworked, which is coming in handy as I learn the ropes of SR shaving.  Second, I recall watching one of the Maestro Livi videos where he is getting a SR shave.  They reference the disinfectant properties of alum.  I figure if its good enough for Maestro Livi, its good enough for me : )

I have a bottle of Thayers coming my way and my plan is to use it right after the rinse at end of shave then splash followed by a balm.

I use the astringent Witch Hazel with alcohol.  Thayers is great, but I find the inexpensive, generic Witch Hazel to work just as well.

I always use witch hazel and rarely use Alum blocks. I find the Alum gives me more irritation.

I don't use alum, Thayers or witch hazel ever; I go straight to the alcohol-based aftershave, preferably with menthol.  The aftershave cools and tones my face.

I use alum after every shave because it helps me with ingrown hairs. I use Dickinson's witch hazel at night before bed to clean my face. Witch hazel doesn't work as well for me as an after shave.

I like menthol in my aftershaves for this reason I like Myrsol products.

I'm not sure any of the Thayers is mentholated?
