My name is Ron and I'm 64. I live in a somewhat rural area about an hour South of Chicago. Even though I've been here 10 years; it's still quite a change from San Francisco where I spent the first 50 years of my life. For various reasons I've been looking to make some very "old school" changes to my life. Back to a flat-top for example. Do you have any idea how hard it is to find anyone nowadays who can cut one? Finally after many months I found a Barbershop owned by two Italian Brothers (mid 30's) who are 3rd. generation Barbers. A top notch flat top and hot towel shave for $25.00. It was those fabulously indulgent shaves that made me think about my daily shave. So....my Christmas $$ went for a Merkur 38C and a sample pack of blades and I've never looked back. My technique improves each week and now I'm very satisfied with the results of my 2 pass daily shave. A little Trumper Coral Skin Food and I'm good to go. Today's the BIG DAY though. Until now it's been foam in a can; but yesterday my Kent BLK4 Brush arrived along with some Truefitt & Hill India Limes Shave Cream. I bounced on here to review the basics of lathering and decided to join up as well. Going to attack that 2 day stubble now; wish me luck!

Hello Ron, welcome to The Shave Nook. I'm sure the two-day stubble was easily taken care of with your equipment. There are many people here who are willing to answer any of your questions. P.S. As one gets older, you're supposed to move to warmer climates, not colder ones.  Biggrin

Thank you ALL for the warm welcome! I've had a most enjoyable afternoon poking around the various areas on here. I'm excited about joining in on some of the non-shave areas as well, like cooking and photography. It appears the members here are a very well rounded bunch :-)

Welcome, Ron! Make sure to visit Q Brothers if you make it to Chicago. You'll find plenty of supplies there!

Thanks guys.
Q Brothers, is that the one that's next door to and/or merged with Mertz Apothecary? I believe they use to advertise on WFMT. I'm up for a shave trip trip downtown when the weather gets a hair less weird here; Truefitt & hill is downtown as well. We've had no snow to speak of, but the Polar Vortex visits every other week with sub-zero temperatures. Speaking of WFMT if any of you like Classical Music; try their webfeed; they don't have the snooty attitude of most Classical Stations.

Thanks everyone!

Charleston is one of my favorite places. It's also a retirement option in a couple of years; finances permitting. Perhaps someday we can meet there for a Mint Julep and share some shave stories.

welcome sir.

If you make the trek into the city, The Merz Apothecary at Lincoln Park is a mecca for wetshaving. Skip the Palmer House location.
